When your little ones start whining about having to help with the cleaning chores, the home cleaning experts at MOLLY MAID suggest you keep everything fun - with more cleaning games! It's a good lesson about the importance of cleanliness around the house, and it's fun! Why not give these games a try? Shoot for the Hoops : Set up a laundry basket and ask your children to sort the socks. When they have found a pair, have them fold one into the other (to create a ball) and practice their free throws! Tally to see who gets the most in the basket. Dust for Coins : Hide some coins around the house and ask your children to do some dusting. When they come across a coin they can keep it once that area has been dusted. Fashion Show : Ask your children to walk down the catwalk and model clothes that they haven't worn in a while. After each turn, vote on which clothes stay in the wardrobe and which clothes get donated. Race Against Time : Name a specific task such as collecting all of the dirty clothes off the floor, and set a time limit. If kids complete the task in time, reward them with an extra 10 minutes of playtime before bed.

How to Get Your Kids to Love Helping You Clean - Part 1

Teaching children to pitch in with household chores is a significant life lesson as it demonstrates the importance of teamwork and responsibility, and it allows them to develop a sense of pride around completed tasks. However, we all know that chores aren't the most exciting or fun thing to do. What you have to do is make cleaning a game - and why not start this long weekend? The kids will be having fun, and you'll benefit from a cleaner house! The cleaning experts at MOLLY MAID offer these creative ways to make cleaning fun for your children: Put on some fun music and invent silly games. For example, have your children clean up their toys only using their feet; or have your children clean up one section of the toy room before the song ends - and then dance with them for the rest of the song! Skate for dust bunnies. Finally, here's a great use for those socks that have lost their mate! Put on some old socks and 'skate' around the floors, picking up dust bunnies along the way. You can also have your child put a matchless sock on their hand and dust along flat surfaces and baseboards - the baseboard is the racetrack and the sock is their car. Paint the dust away. Have your children use a clean, soft paintbrush to remove dust from window frames, doors tracks, knick-knacks, computer keyboards, etc. The thickness of the paintbrush will be determined by the size of the job, but soft bristle brushes are always recommended to ensure the surface they're cleaning isn't scratched or damaged. Visit us again next week for even more fun ways to get your children helping around the home!

A Cleaning Trick That Will Make Your Mother’s Day

Mother's Day is May 12 th , and the experts at MOLLY MAID suggest you surprise Mom by giving her a bouquet of flowers and by doing a bit of cleaning (of her most dreaded chores, the toilet). The best part is there's a quick and easy 'double duty' cleaning trick that you can use for both! All you need is a package of effervescent antacid tablets, such as Alka-Seltzer. Shimmering Flower Vase Once you have given your Mom flowers and a big hug, it's important to make sure you have a clean vase to put the flowers into. The Alka-Seltzer tablet will lift leftover bouquet residue from the bottom of a vase. Here's how: Fill the vase with warm water Add 1-2 tablets and let sit for a few minutes Swish the water and rinse Fill with fresh water and the bouquet of flowers, then put them somewhere you know Mom will enjoy them - maybe the kitchen table or the coffee table in the living room. Sparkling Toilet Cleaning the toilet is easy with Alka-Seltzer too: Pop 1-2 tablets into the toilet bowl and let the fizz attack stubborn stains for 10-15 minutes Give a swish around with the toilet brush Then flush - it's as simple as that!

BREATHE: Natural Air Fresheners for Your Home

When the rooms in your home begin to smell a bit dusty, try these natural, air freshener ideas. They're a refreshing change to chemical air fresheners that you buy. Open the windows. Set out bowls of vinegar, which absorb odours. Make your own citrus air freshener for the bathroom: Ingredients: 2 cups hot water 1/8 cup baking soda ½ cup lemon juice Directions: Dissolve the baking soda in hot water, then add the lemon juice and allow to cool. Pour liquid into spray bottle, shake, and use as needed. For bedrooms, try a vanilla air freshener: Ingredients: 1 cup water 1 cup household vinegar 1 Tbsp vanilla extract Directions: Bring all ingredients to a boil then simmer over medium heat for two minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Pour liquid into spray bottle, shake and use as needed. Note: Increase/decrease the amount of vanilla to your preference. Fill a pot with water and add favourite fragrant ingredients such as cinnamon, herbs and citrus peels, and simmer all day. For the fridge or bathroom, try an orange freshener: Ingredients: 1 Orange Salt Directions: Cut an orange in half and remove the pulp; Fill the empty shell with some salt; Put the freshener in the back of your fridge or behind your toilet. Keep the orange shell in a small bowl so it won't tip over and spill the salt. The salt absorbs stale and unpleasant odors while the shell releases a fresh, orange scent. (Recipes/ideas from http://tipnut.com/easy-air-fresheners)

Remove Furniture Dents From Carpeting... Easy!

If you're changing furniture around in a carpeted room, you may notice that 'dents' have been left by heavy pieces in the carpet. Here's a simple trick from the cleaning experts at MOLLY MAID to remove these problem spots! Place one ice cube in carpet dent. If there is a longer or larger dent, multiple ice cubes may be required. As the ice cube melts, the carpet should begin to fluff back up and reduce in size. Check the results after the ice cube melts and remove any excess water with a cloth. If there is still a dent, use a fork to gently lift the carpet fibres and give it a fluffy appearance. Do NOT use this method if your carpets are hand dyed, antique or delicate, such as silk carpets. NOTE: It's always a good idea to test this method on a small area before you begin. Place an ice cube on top of your carpet in the corner of the room. Once it has melted, check that that the water hasn't damaged the under flooring by lifting the corner of the carpet.

How to ‘Green Clean’ Your Community and Home for Earth Day

When the snow melts, it's often shocking when you see how much garbage has accumulated. But the mess also inspires many communities to organize annual spring cleaning events for their parks and recreation areas. Having the community work together not only creates a sense of pride and camaraderie among neighbours, but the earth itself also benefits from a clean and green environment! Watch for news of a community clean-up in your neighbourhood - and be sure to volunteer. These events are often organized around Earth Day, which falls on April 22 nd this year. MOLLY MAID shares the following safety tips for participating in your local clean up event: To avoid stumbling upon any hazardous materials, visually scan the area you're cleaning before starting. Make sure you wear gloves at all times and when handling garbage of any kind. This will help limit the bacteria and potential sharp objects that may otherwise have come in contact with your bare skin. Wear bright coloured clothing if you're cleaning up near roads or in high traffic areas - so vehicles will be able to easily see you. Carry a water bottle and take frequent breaks to hydrate yourself - double breaks, if it's warm outside Wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun (you can still get a sunburn if it's cloudy because UV rays burn through the clouds). Bring sanitizer to apply throughout the day and thoroughly wash your hands when you get home. If you want your house to have a green clean, call MOLLY MAID . Every MOLLY MAID clean is done using cleaning products from our Green Housekeeping Program . Our green cleaning service is designed for the health and safety of our customers, their family and pets, our staff, and to protect the environment.

4 Steps to an Extra Clean Bed – and Sweeter Dreams

Studies suggest that many people sleep better if they're in a clean room and bed. Since you spend almost one-third of your life asleep, it makes sense to schedule regular deep-cleans of the entire bed. The expert cleaners at MOLLY MAID have created an easy, four-step cleaning guide that will freshen the mattress, help eliminate dust, and create a wonderful place for you to lay your head. Step 1 : Remove all bedding, including sheets, pillow cases, mattress pad, valences, etc. Wash them in hot water - at a minimum of 50 degrees Celsius. Step 2 : Vacuum the entire surface of your mattress, including the sides and underside. Step 3 : Use a natural stain remover or a laundry spot remover to treat and remove any stains. Be careful not to spray on this product too heavily. The cleaners at MOLLY MAID recommend using a dry cloth to blot the cleaning solution spray over the stained area with water. Then, blot the water up with a dry microfibre cloth to help remove any chemicals that may have been left in the process. Step 4 : Mix together a small amount of baking soda with a tablespoon of your favourite fabric softener - sprinkle this mixture over your mattress. Let it sit for one hour, and then vacuum it all up. (Do this once every couple of months, but be careful not to use too much fabric softener.) Note: If you use liquid cleaner or water on your mattress, allow it to dry for a full four hours before you place linen back on the bed. This will prevent any mold or mildew from drawing upon extra moisture.

If your son or daughter comes home from a soccer practice covered in mud, don't panic! The house cleaning experts at MOLLY MAID know how to tackle those stains while avoiding the problem of clogging the filters in your washing machine. Follow these simple steps to remove stains: Let the mud stains dry completely. Gently - and carefully - scrape away any excess dirt. Rub the stains with a little bit of liquid dish soap with your fingers in order to loosen ground-in dirt. Add a few drops of water to the stain and detergent. If the items are REALLY muddy, follow steps one and two again. Then, place items in a bucket of cold water, add detergent - and pre-soak the items. Use a cloth to loosen mud from the fabric. Wash the item according to the washing guidelines. When the wash is completed, check to see if any stains remain. If there are, repeat the previous steps. Note: Definitely do NOT put clothing in the dryer if stains are persistent and still remain. Heat will set the stain, making it even harder to remove.

Clean up after April Fool’s Day

Love April Fool's Day pranks but hate the clean-up? Not to worry, say the cleaning experts at MOLLY MAID who share a few tricks of their own here to help you tackle two particularly icky stains. Vaseline - Spreading Vaseline on a door knob can get a few good laughs, but then someone goes and wipes their hands on their shirt. It's best to pre-treat the stain before you wash it. Here's how: Remove as much of the Vaseline as possible without spreading the stain. Gently dab a small amount of liquid dish soap onto the stained area, and let it sit for five minutes. Rinse thoroughly to flush out the soap and any remaining Vaseline. Apply your usual stain removal spray, then toss the shirt into the washer with a regular load of laundry. Urine - Some people still pull the 'hand in a warm cup of water' prank... yikes! While most people think urine is a stain that can't be removed, MOLLY MAID actually has a tried-and-true cleaning method that you can use to remove both the odour and stain from a mattress (if you have young kids) or carpets (if you've got pets). Mix one part white vinegar and two parts liquid dish soap. Generously apply mixture to the stain with a clean, dry microfibre cloth and let sit for 30 minutes. Take a clean, wet microfibre cloth and pull up as much of the soap mixture as you can. Sprinkle the wet area with baking soda and leave for several hours (or overnight if possible), then vacuum the remainder of the baking soda.

Spring Clean Your Clothes Closet... 1, 2, 3!

Cleaning out your clothes closet - packing away warm clothing and hanging up spring and summer items - is one of those must-do chores at this time of year. The cleaning experts at MOLLY MAID recommend this simple way to streamline the process. Get three containers (bins or bags) and label them: 'Keep', 'Donate' and 'Toss'. Then, follow these rules of thumb to help you decide where each piece of clothing belongs: 1. Keep Keep all 'favourite' items of clothing that you've recently worn within the last few months. Keep items from last spring and summer that are in good shape and that you look forward to wearing. If any of the clothes have been hanging in the closet unworn for a long time (they may even still have price tags but have passed the return/exchange date at the store), maybe it's time to reconsider keeping them. Perhaps they should be put into the 'donate' container. 2. Donate Donate clothes that you didn't wear last year. If you keep the same clothes in your closet year-round (regardless of the season) then shorten this to a six month rule. If an article of clothing hasn't been worn in six months, it's time to let someone else enjoy it instead. 3. Toss Toss any items that are full of rips, holes or stains. Consider re-using some of the tossed pieces of clothing as rags for cleaning. Examine the pile and consider if any items would work cut up as cleaning rags, especially for those outdoor projects that include dirt or grease (think: cleaning the BBQ or lawn mower).

March 17 th is St. Patrick's Day and what better way to celebrate than by going green when you clean the house! The cleaning experts at MOLLY MAID provide these green cleaning tips: Wash the majority of your laundry in cold water (bed sheets should be washed in hot water). There are many laundry soaps now available that have been formulated for cold water. Open curtains and shutters throughout your home and enjoy the natural light, rather than keeping the lights on and wasting energy (and money). Speaking of lights, always remember to turn lights off when you leave a room . Also, shut down any electronic devices you aren't using (this will also save money on your hydro bill). Install rain barrels at the downspouts of your eaves troughs to collect rain water - and use it for watering household plants. You can use the previously collected rain water for your garden too, if it doesn't rain for a few days. Let other people reuse items you no longer need or want. Donate clothes, toys and other household supplies to a local charity. Someone else is sure to find a new treasure from your old trinkets.

Do you stuff your plastic shopping bags under your sink or in one of your kitchen drawers? Using plastic bags can be harmful to the environment and they can clutter your home. The expert home cleaners at MOLLY MAID recommend using a canvas bag instead. Here are four reasons why: 1. A canvas bag lasts a long time while plastic bags are not biodegradable and can harm wildlife and the environment. 2. Plastic bags stretch and rip apart easily - they're really not as reliable as canvas to carry heavy groceries. 3. Canvas bags are easy to keep clean - just throw them into the wash, which rids them of any bacteria and dirt. 4. Canvas bags are multi-purpose - use them for general shopping, books, clothes, etc.

How to Bust the Dust in Your Home

As winter slowly turns into spring, the dust in your home seems to become more obvious. The fact there is more sunlight is one reason (sun seems to make dust shine too!). The other reason may be that your home is becoming a little cluttered; with the weather lately we don't know if we should have winter boots and coats or running shoes and sweaters, so everything is being pulled out of the closet frequently! How can you keep things more pristine? It's almost time for your spring cleaning , so tackling the clutter is going to make a huge difference. Regular cleaning and light surface dusting will also help maintain a dust-free, beautiful home. You can even ask kids to help out; suggest they dust their own rooms and turn it into a game.) Here are other tips that will help keep your home dust-free: Use door mats to prevent dust and dirt from entering your home. Brush your pets because they bring in a lot of dirt and debris too. Brushing them regularly will minimise the amount of dander and pet hair in your home. Use a microfibre cloth. MOLLY MAID cleaners use microfibre cloths because they work so well and capture even the tiniest dust particles. Go over dusted areas with fabric softener sheets. The anti-static component in the sheets helps prevent further dust build-up and can easily take the place of more expensive electrostatic cloths. But be careful not to use these on sensitive electronic items such as televisions and computers. Don't forget windows and blinds - close all of your blinds and briskly dust them off all at once. Always dust top to bottom, left to right. This ensures that you won't go over surfaces multiple times and the dust won't fall onto a surface you've already cleaned.

Germ Zones: How to Keep the ‘Big 3’ Clean

Cold and flu season is well underway and it's important to do everything you can to prevent spreading germs in the home. Remind everyone in the family to wash their hands often and to cover their mouths when they cough. Be extra careful about cleaning the germ zones in the home as well. The cleaning experts at MOLLY MAID recommend regular cleaning and sanitizing to prevent bacteria growth. 1. Sink Did you know that the bathroom and kitchen sinks can contain more bacteria than the toilet bowl? Wipe them down regularly with disinfectant. If you have a stainless steel sink, cut a lemon in half, put baking soda on the lemon halve, rub down sink area and rinse. The lemon will act as a disinfectant while leaving a citrusy scent. Always dry the sink after cleaning for best results. To clean taps and handles, soak paper towel in white vinegar and use it to wipe down the taps. 2. Dishes Keeping the dishwasher sanitized helps to keep dishes safe and clean too. Sprinkle baking soda onto a damp microfibre and use it to wipe around your dishwasher. The experts at MOLLY MAID recommend that you run an empty cycle every once in a while to ensure the cleanliness. Never leave your dishes sitting out; always clean it as you use them. Mould and bacteria can grow and multiply, especially if you are stacking them in your sink. 3. Kitchen Counters Wipe down your kitchen surfaces after every use. This is important because your utensils and hands come in contact with your countertops several times throughout the day.

All Wrapped Up: Do’s and Don’ts of Food Storage

Are you planning a delicious Valentine's Day dinner with your special someone? Make sure you know how to wrap up the leftovers! Storing food properly prevents food contamination and helps to preserve the food quality and taste. The experts at MOLLY MAID recommend these do's and don'ts: Do: Do put the food in an air-tight container. The rule of thumb is to eat leftovers within two days. Do let warm leftovers cool down for at least 90 minutes before you package them up and put them into the fridge. If food is still hot when it is placed in the fridge, it can heat the temperature of the fridge and that can increase bacteria. Do store meat in a container at the bottom of your fridge so that it can't leak onto other food. Do freeze meat and fish before the use-by date. When defrosting meat, do keep it in a plastic bag placed in a bowl - in order to prevent leakage. Do clean the fridge regularly in order to keep it hygienic and prevent bacteria growth and to maintain its condition. Don't: Don't store food in an opened can because metal from the can may transfer into the actual food. Instead, empty the contents of the can into an air tight container or a bowl, cover it and place in the fridge. Don't refreeze meat or seafood once it has been thawed. Don't keep food in the freezer indefinitely. Date packages if possible so you always know what's in the freezer (and fridge) and try to plan meals accordingly. Don't reheat food more than once. Once defrosted and heated, eat food immediately and only defrost as much as you can eat. The more times you reheat food, the higher the risk of food poisoning.

Clean your Keyboard Regularly: 5 Easy Steps

Have you ever had a stuck key on your keyboard? It's probably time for a good clean! Considering that a keyboard is usually used daily and often subjected to crumbs, spilled coffee and dirty fingers, it's no wonder performance is affected. How often it needs to be cleaned depends on a few things: where the keyboard is located (home or office), how many people use it (one person versus the whole family or several people in the office), and the season (if it's cold and flu season, you'll want to clean it more often to keep it germ-free). The cleaning experts at MOLLY MAID recommend these five steps to clean and disinfect your keyboard. Unplug your keyboard and/or remove any batteries. If there's no USB keyboard connection, be sure to turn the computer off before cleaning. To remove crumbs, etc., turn the keyboard upside down and gently shake the keyboard. But be sure to do this in an area where the dirt and debris can easily be wiped up. Use a disinfectant wipe, but be sure that the wipe is not overly damp. Give the wipe a squeeze before using it if necessary. Wipe down the keyboard keys with a slightly damp microfibre cloth. Use a dry microfibre cloth to absorb any remaining moisture.

The expert house cleaners at MOLLY MAID provide this daily task checklist and suggest divvying it up amongst your family (or tacking it in various areas in the house). If everyone can commit to these chores, the house will sparkle - and your deep clean spring clean will be a lot easier to manage. 1. Keep the toilet clean by swishing the toilet brush around the bowl and rim. 2. After each shower, squeegee/wipe shower door and walls. 3. Put dirty laundry in hampers and clean laundry in dressers/closets. 4. Pick up clutter and either recycle/toss it or put it in the proper place. 5. Sort garbage and recycling as you create it. 6. Wipe up all spills and splatters immediately. 7. When you're done with dishes, put them into the dishwasher, or wash them by hand after dinner. 8. Wipe down sinks, counters and the kitchen/dining room table. 9. Change kitchen dishcloths and hand/drying towels. 10. Clean up after your pets in the yard and always wipe their paws when they come inside.

When unexpected company calls and tells you they're just 15 minutes away... you may have to scramble a bit to put the house in order. The guest bathroom, for sure, needs a quick clean. Here are 7 swift cleaning tips to help make the guest bathroom presentable in a time-crunch: Remove any towels (put them right into the closest laundry hamper) and put out fresh hand towels. Close the shower curtain or spray visible shower walls with a bathroom cleaner and run a dry squeegee down the walls. Clean the mirror with glass cleaner and shine the faucet and taps. Wipe down the counter and sink and de-clutter the counter space (but make sure there's still soap for hand washing). Swab a toilet brush around the bowl , and wipe the toilet seat and outer rim. Sweep or vacuum the floor and spot clean any noticeable spots. Place a new roll of toilet paper on the holder to ensure it doesn't run out while your guests are visiting.

Recycle and Repurpose: MOLLY MAID Shares 3 Simple Strategies

There is never a shortage of great ways to recycle and repurpose common household items! Who better than the expert house cleaners at MOLLY MAID to introduce ideas that work! Here are three ways to recycle and repurpose: 1. Vacuum with Wrapping Paper Tubes Do you still have some of those long cardboard wrapping paper tubes left over from the holidays? Besides your children using the empty tubes as light sabres, the tubes can double as a makeshift vacuum extension tool to clean hard-to-reach ceiling corners and along the sides of your stove or washer and dryer. 2. Work Wonders with a Toothbrush Did you get a new toothbrush in your stocking this year? Why not use your old one as a grout and grime scrubber! A toothbrush is a great tool to clean around taps and faucets, bathtub and shower edges, and even tile and grout. An electric toothbrush works even better! Pairing the toothbrush with elbow grease can clean up even the worst dirt. 3. Use a Pant Hanger in the Kitchen Having a dinner party after the holidays? The hanger with clips attached that is used for hanging up pants and skirts, can be multi-purposed into a cookbook holder too. Simply open the cookbook to your desired recipe and use each clip at the ends of the hanger to keep the book open to that page. If the cookbook isn't too heavy, hook the hanger onto the handle of one of your kitchen cabinets to maximize your counter space. It's so easy - and useful.

It's a brand New Year so why not make some time to match it with a brand new you? The key is to think positively and realistically about your goals for 2013 and allow yourself the time to do so. Our top tips for a healthy and positive new year are: 1. Be active: Exercise releases feel-good endorphins and has been shown to be beneficial to your mental well-being as well as your physical fitness. Remember, you don't have to be an athlete - even a nice walk will help to clear your mind. 2. Go green: Take advantage of the natural surroundings available on your doorstep and head out for a walk with the family in the woods or the parks. Studies have shown that connecting with nature positively boosts your mood. 3. Try something new: New hobbies can exercise your mind and challenge your body - you might even surprise yourself. Why not try Sudoku, learn a new language or sign up for those lessons you've been wanting to take. 4. Give back: Helping your community can be just as rewarding for you personally as it is for those you help. Become a volunteer with your local charity or community group. Or, why not sign up to do a charitable walk or run and achieve two goals in one! 5. Relax: Allow MOLLY MAID to give you back the valuable gift of time to help you do the things you love.

Christmas Clean-Up – It’s Easier Than You Think

Traditionally, Boxing Day was when tradesmen collected "Christmas boxes" of money or presents as thanks for good service throughout the year. Today, Boxing Day is a day spent with family, shopping the sales - or cleaning up. And a quiet day at home after all the festivities is the perfect time to clean up a bit, says the house cleaning experts at MOLLY MAID. Here's a guide: Recycle what you can! Cardboard boxes can be recycled, and why not smooth and fold up wrapping paper that hasn't been torn apart and box up bows that are still in tip top shape for next year. A much loved activity for children is to cut up Christmas cards into shapes that can be used as gift tags for next year's presents. Or, they can create holiday bookmarks from larger cards. Did you receive new clothes? Rather than finding new hangers, see if you can donate some of your old clothes and use the hangers they were on to keep closet clutter down and help those in need. Did your kids receive lots of new toys? Do a quick sweep of toys in the toy box and in your kids' rooms. Package up toys your kids have out grown and donate them to children in need. Give the house a quick clean in the run-up to the New Year, to pick up those cookie crumbs and to clean the marks on the kitchen floor from the dozens of people traipsing through the kitchen. Of course, if you'd rather spend your time doing something you love, call MOLLY MAID for a helping hand.

Make Time for Holiday Magic – Here Are 6 Time-Savers

'So much to do and so little time' - sounds like the run-up to Christmas, doesn't it? With cooking, last minute shopping, gift wrapping, cards to write and house cleaning, it's a wonder how you get to enjoy the holidays. But there are a few ways you can build in time. Here are 5 small jobs that you can take care of ahead of time... so that you can enjoy the holiday magic. TIME SAVERS Design a rough menu plan for the days surrounding Christmas when you may have guests. Think of ways to decorate your table - perhaps a centrepiece or Christmas poppers on each plate. Dress up desserts with raspberries, mint leaves, or chocolate shavings. Taking just one extra minute for a final touch will have your guests in awe. This will also help you with your last minute grocery shopping list to limit trips to the grocery store. Clean out the fridge and sort through the freezer to make space for Christmas food. Rummaging through an overstocked, messy freezer, trying to find food can become irritating. This will also ensure you have room to store all those leftovers! Double check cutlery and glassware and avoid the annoyance of discovering on Christmas morning there aren't enough glasses or one of the spoons has mysteriously disappeared. You'll be so pleased you did. Sharpen knives including the carving knife well in advance. This makes all the chopping, peeling and carving so much easier. Prepare all the food that you can ahead of time if you are entertaining. There are plenty of things you can do in advance such as pre-boil the parsnips and potatoes separately for three minutes and then freeze them before roasting a few days later. Cranberry sauce can also be made a couple days in advance. Chop up vegetables for salads and store them in clearly-marked plastic bags. Cut squares of butter for the table and keep them wrapped in plastic wrap until you're ready to arrange them beautifully on a plate. Give yourself the gift of regular MOLLY MAID cleaning services . It may be the best gift you get this year! * Bonus Tip - NOW FOR THE HOLIDAY MAGIC * Christmas Day and Christmas Eve are a perfect time to recreate traditions and create new memories. Plan to do one special activity this year that you've enjoyed in other years. Share quiet times with individual family members. Read or watch holiday classics with friends or family in front of a fire. Don't let these precious moments escape - be sure to capture them on camera too!

Christmas Is Coming - How to Prepare Your House for Holiday Guests

Christmas is such a wonderful time of year with lots of special occasions and get-togethers. If you have friends and family coming with their overnight bags, prepare your home ahead of time so it's a relaxed and stress-free visit for everyone. The house cleaning experts at MOLLY MAID provide these cleaning tips to help make your home shine for your guests (and yourself). First Impressions : Use a damp cloth to wipe away dirt and brighten up a dull front door with a decorative wreath. Also, be sure there is adequate outdoor lighting to help guide any guests up the path. Clear the Halls :The hallway and stairs can become a dumping ground for damp coats and outdoor shoes. Keep the area clutter-free by providing coat hooks and a shoe mat/rack. For the holidays, replace any worn doormats too. It looks welcoming and helps to protect your carpets throughout the house from dirty footprints. Set the Scene : Welcome guests into a beautifully presented living room. Soft throw blankets and pretty cushions provide an instant update for your sofa while bean bags are great portable seating for younger visitors. Remember to prevent marks and spillages by putting coasters out to protect surfaces from cups of tea and glasses of champagne. Flowers will add a delicate fragrance and an instant lift to the room - try a festive flower such as hyacinths or a Christmas rose. Let it Glow : No matter what the weather, candlelight will bring a warm glow to your home. Place tall tapered candles on the dining table, put tea lights in coloured holders on the mantle place and shelves, and arrange decorative candles in guest rooms. The interior design rule is that odd numbers look better than even... so arrange candles in groups of three or five and make sure you have a replacement stock for when they burn out. Choose non-drip candles so that you don't have to clean up dripped wax and introduce a spice scented option to add to the festive atmosphere. Never leave a candle unattended and be sure to supervise pets and children around candles at all times. Silent Night : Make up beds for overnight guests ahead of time and be sure to provide space and hangers for their clothes. To make guests feel really welcome leave a Christmas treat on their pillow for them as well, but close the door to protect everything from children and pets! If you have more guests than beds consider buying an inflatable mattress that can be inflated in seconds and packed away and stored easily. Bathroom Glitz : Thoroughly clean the bathroom before overnight guests arrive. Put personal items in the cupboard and tidy all lotions and soap on the countertop - if you've run out of storage space consider a wicker basket, which always looks nice. When the room is gleaming and clutter-free, put out a fresh bar of soap, towels, shower gel and shampoo. For the perfect finish choose colour co-ordinated products. And don't forget to leave a good supply of toilet paper too! Add Sparkle : Check your supplies of essential cleaning products and make sure you have sufficient dish soap, dishwasher tablets and carpet shampoo. Allocate specific responsibilities - such as loading the dishwasher, vacuuming the carpet and sorting the laundry - to different members of the family so that you don't end up doing everything yourself. Of course, if you just haven't got the time and need a helping hand, MOLLY MAID can help make your home sparkle from top to bottom and give you the valuable gift of time.

What You Need: 350 g/12 oz - plain flour 1 tsp - baking soda 2 tsp - ground ginger 1/2 tsp - salt (half) 100 g/4 oz - butter 175 g/6 oz - soft brown sugar 1 - egg 4 tbsp - maple syrup different coloured hard candies (Jolly Ranchers or suckers) narrow ribbon holiday cookie cutter shapes (such as stars, bells, reindeer, etc.) How to Make Cookies: Pre-heat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. In a bowl, mix together flour, baking soda, ginger and salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture is crumbly. Stir in the sugar. In a separate bowl, beat together the egg and maple syrup. Then, add to flour mixture and mix together to form smooth dough, kneading lightly with your hands. On a flat surface, crush the candies in their wrappers using a rolling pin. Remove wrappers. Sprinkle flour on a clean work surface and roll out the dough until about ½ cm (1/4 in) thick. Cut out different holiday shapes from the dough and transfer to baking sheets lined with parchment paper. Cut out shapes in the centre of each cookie, making sure you leave a good edge all around the cookie. Completely fill that space in each cookie with the crushed candy. Make a hole at the top of each cookie using a drinking straw (so you will be able to thread a ribbon through it later). Bake cookies for 11-12 minutes until golden (the crushed candy will melt and harden giving a transparent, stained glass look). Cool cookies, thread a ribbon through each one to make a hanger, and hang on your tree. Makes 25 cookies. And there you have it - 3 days of homemade decorations!

What You Need: 1 thin green pipe cleaner small 'thread-able' bead or bell thread-able buttons (with at least two holes each) of different sizes How To Make It: Sort buttons by size, from smallest to largest. Fold the pipe cleaner in half to find the midway point. Open up the pipe cleaner and thread the bead or bell on until it sits at the midway point. Starting with the largest button, thread each end of the pipe cleaner through opposite holes on the button (this could be the trickiest part for young children). Push the button so that it sits on top of the bead. Repeat with different sized buttons, working from the largest to smallest to create a miniature tree shape. Once the pipe cleaner is filled, twist the remaining ends together and fashion into a hook shape to hang on a branch of your tree. Check out the post we'll have tomorrow to learn how to make stained glass window cookies!

If you're dreaming of a green Christmas, why not plan a few craft days and make your own holiday decorations with your family. Homemade decorations are perfect to use to decorate gifts, display around the house, or hang on the tree… and making them together is a wonderful way to celebrate the season and make the holiday a little greener. Your little ones can help with these but always supervise kids of all ages especially when the oven is involved. (The expert house cleaners at MOLLY MAID also recommend cleaning up the craft table when you're finished to avoid spills, stains and other problems.) Day 1 - PAPER BAUBLE What You Need: 4, 1 cm x 40 cm strips of gold paper or decorative paper brass fasteners (Bradley clips) gold string or wire hand-held hole puncher How To Make It: Punch a hole in the centre of each strip of paper. Punch a hole at both ends, 1cm from each edge. Position a brass fastener so that the prongs are facing upwards. Insert each of the 4 strips onto the fastener through the middle hole. Lay the strips evenly in a star shape. Gather the ends toward the fastened centre, overlapping them and repeating until all strips are gathered and each punched hole lines up. Insert the brass fastener through the holes and close it. Tie either a piece of gold string or gold wire to the fastener. Watch for tomorrow's post on how to make Button Trees !

While you're on the hunt for Christmas cards this year, why not get your card shopping done for the whole year! The maid service experts at MOLLY MAID, who are also experts at organizing just about anything, suggest this easy, time-efficient shopping trick: create a chart of the cards you need so you can be well prepared once you get to the store. List each month across the top of a piece of paper. Down the side of the paper, write down all the occasions you purchase cards for (birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, etc.) Include names of your friends and family beside each occasion and under the particular month. Bring this chart with you so you can make sure you've covered all the cards you need for the entire year and never have to scramble last minute ever again. Many card stores offer 'buy one, get one' sales around special occasions so keep your eyes open for these to save some money!

How to Make the Linen Closet Work For You

If opening the door to your linen closet causes an avalanche of towels, wash clothes and other linens, it's time to take control and organize and optimize the space. The cleaning experts at MOLLY MAID provide these quick tips: 1. Towels : Instead of stacking towels and cramming them in between the shelves, roll them up. This works the same way as when you roll up your clothing when packing for vacation. It is a fabulous space saver and the extra perk is that it makes your closet look pretty too! 2. Sheets : Keep the fitted and top sheets inside their matching pillowcase so you always know where the complete set is. 3. Regular Usage : Keep regularly used linens on the mid- to lower shelves - so they are always easy to access and find. 4. Extra Supplies : Get rid of extra blankets and bed covers that you just don't use or need anymore. Donate them to a shelter, etc. This cleaner closet strategy is one of the best because you are helping others. 5. Fresh Smell : To add a nice scent each time you open the closet door, place scented liners on your shelves or keep an air freshener inside. Some fresheners smell just like fresh linen... so you can keep that freshly laundered scent even longer!

Dog Breath Be Gone: MOLLY MAID Knows What To Do!

The cold weather may mean you are snuggling more often with your pooch... but those slobbery kisses and panting in your face are a huge reminder that a dog's breath can be pretty nasty. Here are 3 easy tricks to help freshen your dog's breath (and it won't cost a fortune!) RAW BONES : If you don't brush your dog's teeth regularly (and vets do recommend that you do) help keep your dog's teeth clean by stocking raw bones.Chewing and gnawing on bones helps clean your dog's teeth and that helps to get rid of the plaque and germ build-up - that cause bad breath. An added bonus? Your dog will love the treat! Check with a butcher or grocery store meat department. CLEAN BOWLS : Food and water bowls are actually an ideal environment for bacteria, which is a major cause of bad breath in dogs. The maid service experts at MOLLY MAID recommend that you wash out your dog's bowls at least every other day to prevent bacterial growth. FRESH WATER : Lastly, remember to regularly change your dog's water. Having clean water helps rinse out your dog's mouth and prevents the ingestion of dirt and other items that may have fallen in the bowl.

Here's how: Keep your immune system healthy by getting at least eight hours of sleep per night, if possible. Wash your hands often or use hand sanitizer when you can't.
Halloween: 4 Ways to Deal with the Aftermath

Halloween is great fun... but the day after all the fun is over has to be one of the messiest of the year with smashed pumpkins, candy stains, glitter and other scary decorations left behind. Have no fears - the experts at MOLLY MAID offer cleaning tips for anyone who has access to soap and water and who expects monsters and other creatures to be traipsing about their home. 1. Fake blood or melted candy . Whether your little vampire dripped ketchup - a.k.a. blood - where they shouldn't have or there's melted Halloween candy on the arm of your sofa, remember the golden rule of stain removal: deal with it as soon as possible! Soak up excess liquid by blotting first (use cool or warm water, never cold or hot) Scrape off excess solids Rub a tiny bit of liquid detergent onto the stain and work your way from the outside of the stain in. Blot with water to remove the soap; repeat if necessary. 2. Toilet paper, shaving cream or silly string . Clean up outdoor decorations like ghostly toilet paper strung in bushes, or shaving cream or silly string used on outdoor items, as soon as you can too. Remove the tissue by hand Hose down outdoor furnishings etc. that has shaving cream on them Soap and water should remove remnants of tissue, shaving cream and silly string 3. Pumpkins . Are there smashed pumpkins on your driveway? Pick up the pieces Hose everything down If there is any dried pumpkin, use a spoon to scrape off as much as possible Scrub with a little dishwashing liquid and water 4. Glitter . Your princess looks beautiful, but she also made a mess with the glitter and now it's everywhere! Vacuum up any glitter that is left behind on the carpets (and you may as well look around for any dirt or dust from shoes that your little goblins may have tracked through the house in their excitement) If the glitter is stuck to items (tables, walls, etc.) use some soap and water to spot clean

Buying organic produce is also recommended - minimal pesticides are used in the production of organic foods. 2. Naked : Keep the environment in mind and choose products that have minimal packaging. Granted, sometimes you can't avoid packaging. But perhaps there are foods you can buy at the bulk food store in place of other packaged foods. (This also sends the message to food manufacturers to reduce packaging.) 3. Nutritious : A diet that highlights healthy food choices (the four food groups) with an emphasis on fresh and unprocessed, is top priority, according to health experts. Fast food and sweets should be treats or foods that you eat once in a while and not as a steady diet. 4. Now : Planning your menus around in-season produce makes so much sense. In the fall, for example, the harvest includes squash, turnip, pumpkins and a huge range of other delicious foods. Not only are these foods at their freshest and tastiest, but sometimes you get a break in price too because the produce hasn't had to travel from another part of the country - or another country.

3 Simple Ways to Keep Your Home – and Life – Organized

It's easier than you think to keep your home tidy... the cleaning experts at MOLLY MAID say that one of the most important rules is to keep the clutter to a minimum. That means having a plan for 'things' that can become clutter. Here are three great suggestions from MOLLY MAID house cleaning experts. 1. KEEP AN ELECTRONIC RECORD OF KIDS' ARTWORK. Children are wonderful artists and they create many masterpieces as they grow up. Rather than keep each torn-out colouring book page or piece of finger painting artwork, have your kids proudly hold up their design and take a photo. This allows you to print off the favourites and place them in an album, or even keep a digital album on your computer. 2. SORT YOUR MAIL JUST ONCE. When you pick up your mail, don't set it down on your counter to sort through later or save it in your purse to further peruse - head straight for the recycle bin. Decide what is important to keep and what can go immediately into the recycle bin - this will keep the mail clutter down. If you're feeling extra ambitious, create a filing system in your office for bills and have two folders or shelf areas labelled: 'Need to Pay' 'Paid' Then, file bills by category (hydro, internet, vehicle expenses, etc.) The accountant in the family will thank you! 3. ORGANIZE SMALL ITEMS. Use those hanging shoe holders to store various accessories and other small things. The shoe holder is a perfect storage receptacle, and it helps keep everything organized so you can find them easily. You can even label each pocket. Here are 3 specific suggestions: Store large pieces of jewellery this way, in your bedroom closet. Hang up one of these shoe holders in a main floor or home office closet and store electronics such as cell phone accessories, digital camera, batteries, etc. Using a shoe holder in your kids' rooms is an easy way to keep small toys off the floor. Asking kids to help you put their toys away helps teach them to be tidy too. For other fabulous house cleaning tips, be sure to visit our MOLLY MAID cleaning tips page.

If you notice your shower isn't as powerful as it once was, or if it's squirting water jets in odd directions, it may be clogged up with limescale deposits. To dissolve the limescale: Unscrew the shower head. Soak it for a few hours in white vinegar mixed with equal parts water. Give it a good rinse and screw back in place. You'll be singing in the shower again in no time!

Why You Should Wash the Washing Machine

It's a good idea to deep clean your washing machine regularly, especially if you often wash clothes with cold water. While it's a great way to save money on energy bills and is better for the environment, there is a downside - washing at 40 degrees or less will not completely rid your washing machine of mould and bacteria. But a special 'service' wash will deal with this problem. A 'service' wash is running the machine using hot water - but no clothes. This should be done once a month, but check your instruction manual. There are other parts of the washing machine that need attention too. Remember, before you do any maintenance on your washing machine, turn it off and unplug it. Clean the seal, drawer and filter Mould and bacteria can fester in the rubber seal around the door opening. After washing have a look at the seal to see if it needs a scrub - doing this regularly can help prevent the build-up of mould and bacteria. If mould has had too long to fester, it may have sunk into the porous rubber of the seal and be impossible to remove. If this happens, you may need to replace the door seal. Mould and bacteria also have a tendency to build up in the detergent drawer and lint filter - so be sure to clean this area too. Leave the door and drawer open Leaving the machine's door open after washing allows air to circulate in the drum and helps prevent the growth of mould and bacteria. Leave the machine's detergent drawer open for the same reason. Check the stand pipe If you notice the washing machine still tends to send out a bad smell, you may have a partial blockage in the standpipe. If you suspect this is the case, use a drain un-blocker to try and clear the pipe. Consult your washing machine handbook.

Most households put the dishwasher to good use but often a film builds up on the inside. Part of your fall clean in the kitchen should include giving the dishwasher a good clean, and there's an easy way to get rid of the film. Here's how: Fill the dishwasher with dirty dishes. Place a bowl with 2 cups of white vinegar on the bottom rack of the dishwasher. Fill the dispenser with dishwashing detergent as you normally would. Run the dishwasher through its normal wash cycle. The vinegar will clean the inside of the dishwasher - it's as simple as that!

How to Remove Pet Hair: It’s Like Magic

If you need to remove pet hair from a carpet or chair, put on a pair of latex gloves and rub the surface with the pet hair on it - the pet hair should stick to your gloves. This will also work with rubber gloves or cloth gardening gloves that have a rubber coating on the palm. (A rubber bristle push broom can work in the same way on floors.) For increased effectiveness, dampen the glove or rubber section of the gloves. If you don't have gloves, dig out that package of birthday balloons . Blow up a balloon and tie off the end. Rub it across the surface that has pet hair on it. The static on the balloon's surface will attract the hair, which you can collect with your other hand. Then, re-use the balloon to get more hair (just think of the fun your kids could have...)

De-clutter Your Kitchen: Here’s A Simple 4-Step Plan

With the change of seasons, now's a good time to do a little 'fall' cleaning in the kitchen. Here's a simple 4-step plan. Take Stock . Be ruthless as you go through your food cupboards and fridge - there's probably items in there that are out of date. Throw the food into the composter and recycle the packaging if you can. If the items are still good, but you know you won't eat them, pack up your non-perishables and donate them to your local food drive. Sort It Out . Spend a day going through all the cupboards to sort through your kitchen tools. Make three piles: a pile for 'always use', another for 'seldom use', and a 'never use' pile. Then, donate anything that ends up in the last group. Alternately, you could have a garage sale and earn some extra money! Put it Away . Clear the clutter by boxingseldom-used and seasonal items such as the ice cream maker and corn-on-the-cob holders... then move those seasonal things out of the kitchen's main area. Consider storing seasonal crockery (i.e .Christmas, Easter and birthdays) and dishes with corresponding decorations so you can get to them when needed. Think Outside the Cupboard . There's no reason to stash your favourite cooking utensils in a crowded drawer... if you can, pop them in an attractive vase by the stove.

Fall For A Clean House: Get Everyone to Help

When it comes to schedules, summer is such a bittersweet time. Children love their time off, but they often fall behind in their chores and it seems the house is always a mess. The good news is that fall is a perfect time to change all that. With kids heading 'back to school', everyone's timetable is a little more rigid, and that's when a house-cleaning schedule makes the most sense. In fact, creating a Family Cleaning Calendar will encourage children to clean up after themselves and teach them what happens when they don't. How to create a calendar? Make a list of all the chores that need to be done (and that kids can help with), and write a family member's name beside each one. An erasable chalk board works really well for this. Be sure to hang it in a central location, usually the kitchen or front hallway so everyone can read it. You're teaching kids . This is a great way to show children that everyone's actions in the family influence the actions of another. If they don't clean up immediately after themselves or if they don't do their chores, then they risk creating more work for someone else. And, if someone doesn't clean up, then maybe your child will have more work on cleaning day. Mix up the chores , make them daily and weekly, and be sure to rotate yourself into the schedule as well. Every week shift the responsibilities. Add a little incentive. Build in an allowance for kids, or a special treat, as payment for the chores.

It's nice to finally crawl into bed at the end of a long day, but how often do you consider the expiry dates of pillows and other items that makes up your bed? MOLLY MAID previously provided household product expiry dates for the bathroom and kitchen . Now it's time to conquer the bedroom. Pillows Expiry Date: 2 years Dust mites and dead skin cells are only a couple of the treasures found in your pillow. Microorganisms feed off of each other and multiply as time goes on. Investing in a new pillow every few years is a good idea. Use a special pillow cover as well. Mattresses Expiry Date: 8-10 years A high quality mattress should supply proper support for many years. To assist in the longevity of your mattress, flip it twice a year and rotate bottom to top. Sheets Expiry Date: 1 week Changing bed sheets should be done on a weekly basis. Naturally produced body oils can build up on sheets and pillow cases and can actually result in breakouts or skin irritation. Of course, the sheets themselves can last many years when properly washed. Plus, there's nothing like crawling into a freshly made bed.

Making sure that the products you use and the foods you eat are safe can be a challenge. The professional cleaning experts at MOLLY MAID recommend these guidelines: Dishcloth Expiry Date: 1 day Bacteria use damp dishcloths as a breeding ground so you should change your dishcloth every day. Microfibre clothes are a great alternative to a traditional dish cloth. Click here to find out why. Cutting Board Expiry Date: As soon as deep grooves or cracks develop When deep cracks or grooves develop it is difficult to properly clean and sanitize your cutting boards, and that can allow a build-up of food particles and bacteria. Leftovers Expiry Date: 2- 4 days Leftovers shouldn't sit in your fridge any longer than a few days. They need to be kept at a temperature of 4 degrees Celsius or colder. Opened Condiments Mustard Expiry Date: 1 year Ketchup Expiry Date: 6 months Mayo Expiry Date: 2 months Remember, the law only requires expiry dates on products with a shelf life of 90 days or less, so not all products will be marked with a 'best before' date. The general - and safe - rule of thumb is: " When in doubt, throw it out ". The above mentioned guidelines are recommendations only. Refer to the manufacturer's guidelines for exact dates of individual products purchased.

You use certain bathroom products every day, but how long should you continue to use the same item before you replace it? MOLLY MAID provides these guidelines for expiry dates of household products you often use in the bathroom. Of course, you should always look for the manufacturers' guidelines as well. Toothbrushes Expiry Date: 3 months The Canadian Dental Association recommends tossing your toothbrush every three months - to avoid a build-up of bacteria and because of wear. Makeup Mascara Expiry Date: 3 months Powders, lipsticks, eye pencils Expiry Date: 6 months Makeup is exposed to bacteria on your face, and that's why you want to follow these guidelines to limit the accumulation of germs. If makeup hasn't been opened it has a shelf life of about two years if stored in a dry, cool place. Razors Expiry Date: As soon as dullness appears (usually after 10-15 uses) If your razor is dull you will experience pulling and irritation when shaving. This can cause cuts and 'razor burn' on your skin and that can feel quite uncomfortable. The quality of razor used can help improve its lifetime. Check back in the coming weeks to learn about the expiry guidelines for kitchen items and bedroom items .

Clean Houses, Clean Bodies: 5 Easy Ways to Detox Your Life

The cleaning experts at MOLLY MAID have learned a lot about green cleaning a home - and detoxing it as they go with green cleaning products and methods. Detoxing the body is also a healthy goal these days, and there are many ways you can do that in your day-to-day life (you don't have to go to a detox centre!) While anyone with special health concerns should talk to their doctor, here are five ways to help naturally detox the body. 1. Eat naturally detoxifying foods : Certain foods are natural cleansers, and these are the foods you want to incorporate into your diet every day. Delicious examples are blueberries, ginger, garlic, broccoli, spinach, cabbage, and sprouts. Drinking lots of water helps too. 2. Read food labels : Have you ever picked up an item when you're grocery shopping, looked at the label and wondered, "What in the world is THAT"? MOLLY MAID professionals steer clear of products that contain multiple ingredients and ingredients that they are unfamiliar with or can't even pronounce! Talk to a registered dietitian or nutritionist for more information. 3. Nix the microwave : When it comes to microwaving food in plastic containers or covered with plastic wrap be sure that these products are labeled microwave safe. Alternatively you can do what MOLLY MAID professionals do - don't use it in the microwave at all. Keep in mind also that some reports show that the microwave alters the structure of food - and that may potentially render it harmful to your body. 4. Move your body every day : Brisk walking or cycling are fun ways to get active. The important thing is that you are active in some way regularly. Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines say that adults need 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity aerobic activity every week (you can accumulate it in bouts of 10 minutes or more). It's important to stretch too... and Tai chi and yoga are great low impact activities that stretch your body and help to relax your mind too. 5. Get massages : A massage is a wonderful way to relax your mind and body. While it can relieve sore muscles (clenched from working at the computer or driving in rush hour traffic), it also improves circulation and leaves you with a feeling of calm.

Cleaning the Laundry Room – How To Make It Shine in 3 Easy Steps

You do laundry every week, but when was the last time you actually cleaned the laundry room? The laundry room is one of those areas in the home that often gets overlooked. When you only have so much time, it seems more important to keep the kitchen and bathrooms clean. Plus, you can always just close the door to the laundry room... and keep that dirty little secret, a secret! But once in a while, the laundry room does need a good cleaning. MOLLY MAID, Canada's number one residential cleaning service, recommends this quick and easy plan to clean it and keep it that way. 1. De-clutter :Collect any lose mats and shake them out outside. Collect garbage as well as random odd socks that may have been left behind. (Keep in mind that a great way to reuse odd socks is as dusters... all you have to do is slide your hand inside and the sock becomes a great duster for cleaning blinds, shutters and other odd surfaces.) 2. Clean :Put a microfibre cloth on the end of your broom handle to reach any cobwebs that have accumulated in the corners of the laundry room. Rinse a microfibre cloth in a bucket of warm soapy water and squeeze it out... and wash the tops, sides and front of the washer and dryer. Wash all other flat surfaces in the room as well as light switches. Sweep and mop the floor, and let dry. If there's a washtub, use the warm soapy water from your bucket to wash it out - so empty the bucket and swish the water around; then rinse everything clean. 3. Organize :To make it easier for the next time, organize the laundry room so everything has a place. Have one bin for dryer lint (it can be composted) and another bin for used dryer sheets (they are coated with chemicals and must be thrown into the garbage). But to cut down on waste, re-use dryer sheets - one is often enough to help diminish static for at least two dryer loads. Use a basket to keep your laundry soap, fabric softener and stain remover all in one place. There you have it: three easy steps to a de-cluttered, cleaned and organized laundry room!

Struggling to find your favourite recipe? Keep your favourite recipes in a file organized into sections, suggest the house cleaning experts at MOLLY MAID. The system may sound ridiculously simple, but it will save you hours of searching when you're looking for that all-time favourite cake recipe or need inspiration for a midweek meal menu. Think about how recipe books present recipes in different sections. For example: appetizers, soups, salads, side dishes, main courses, desserts, brunch, parties. This idea also works brilliantly for recording dinners you have already served at previous dinner parties. Record the menu, the guest list and comments... so you avoid serving the same meal to the same people twice but you also keep track of recipes and dishes that your family and friends loved!

If you're interested in saving time and energy when cooking a large roast for family or friends, here's a tip from the maid service experts at MOLLY MAID: Simply insert a metal skewer into the centre of the joint and leave it there while the roast cooks. The heat actually travels down the metal and more quickly spreads through the meat. Be sure to check the cooking and temperature of your roast by using a thermometer too - because it will likely be done sooner than usual. Enjoy!

3 Ways to Showcase Your Books in Style - MOLLY MAID Explains How

Arranging your books in different patterns is a fun way to liven up your bookshelves and make your books part of your decorating scheme! One way is to use colour and arrange the lightest colours of books on the top shelf and then work your way down for a graduated effect. Another way is to arrange books from the darkest coloured books at one end of a shelf to the lightest books on the other end. For balance, reverse the direction of colour on the next shelf down and so on. A more practical way to showcase books is to arrange them in alphabetical order by author or title and use decorative book ends of big individual letters (placed on the bookshelves or the first book of each letter) to mark the start of each section. These ideas work on all styles of bookcases, from small shelves to a continuous rainbow on a run of wall-shelving. The cleaning services experts at MOLLY MAID recommend that you rotate your books regularly when dusting and cleaning - to help keep the covers from warping and fading. Other cleaning tips: be sure to clean along the top spine with a feather duster or cloth - that's where dust tends to settle.

Six New Uses for Dental Floss from the Cleaning Experts at MOLLY MAID

Dental floss is a wonderful thing… using it every day helps to keep your teeth squeaky clean and your gums healthy! But you can use dental floss for all kinds of other things. It's so strong, and these tips from the maid service experts at MOLLY MAID are ingenious! 1. 'Un-stick' a photograph: If you have an old photo that is stuck to an album page or another snapshot, get out the dental floss and slide a length of it under the corner of the stuck photo. Work the floss between the two surfaces to separate them without damaging the picture. 2. Broken necklace? Rescue a busted strand by threading the beads onto dental floss for a quick, sturdy fix. 3. Hang a picture: To hang lightweight artwork (that's not in a heavy frame), use dental floss in place of picture wire. 4. String popcorn: For the holidays next winter, string a popcorn garland with dental floss. Just thread the floss through a needle as you would ordinary sewing thread. 5. Need a hair tie? If you don't have an elastic or hairband, use dental floss to hold your hair back before you wash your face. 6. Cut cheesecake: Use unwaxed, unflavored floss to slice any soft cheeses or layer cakes.

Dryer sheets work like magic in the dryer - removing static electricity from clothes and adding a nice fresh scent! But did you know that you can use dryer sheets in other ways too? MOLLY MAID, your house cleaning experts, share these amazing tricks… no wonder dryer sheets are the laundry room's most valuable product! 1. Shoe Freshener: Roll up one sheet per slipper, sneaker, or loafer, insert, and forget about stinky shoes. (Bonus uses: Toss them in hampers, on closet shelves or in diaper bags.) 2. Flyaway Hair: Tame flyaway hair by rubbing a sheet over the hair! Of course, you can rid clothes of static cling this way too. 3. Scum Buster: Remove old soap buildup from glass shower doors by sprinkling a few drops of water onto a used fabric-softener sheet and scrubbing the scum away. 4. Drawer Sachet: If fabric-softener sheets make your clothes smell nice in the dryer, just think about what they could do in your dresser. Slip a few fresh sheets between folded clothes. (It's like spring cleaning all year long!)

How to Keep Your Pet Squeaky Clean! MOLLY MAID Provides Some Tips

The milder weather means that instead of struggling to get your muddy pooch into the bathtub (and leaving a mess throughout the house as you get there), you can move the doggie bath outdoors! The maid service experts at MOLLY MAID provide these 5 easy ways to make bath time more enjoyable for you and your pet. 1. Be Prepared . Gather all the essentials you'll need ahead of time and put them outside near the hose. You'll need a pet brush, shampoo, leash, towels, etc. Having all your tools in one place will help make the bathing process run more smoothly. 2. Brush Out Excess Fur . Before you bathe your dog, brush them outside. This helps keep pet hair and dirt out of your house. Then, gather up the excess fur and add it to your compost container. Or, spread it around the edge of your vegetable garden - the fur will help keep out wild animals. Raccoons and rabbits don't like the scent of a dog and will hopefully leave your garden alone. 3. Be Firm . Take control of your dog by asserting yourself from the beginning. Have your dog stand or sit or use their leash to keep them in one place while you turn on the water. 4. Wet, Shampoo, Rinse . Test the water temperature, then wet your pup from head to toe. Apply the dog shampoo (you can buy it at a pet store or grocery store). Once lathered, work the shampoo in for a couple of minutes - what a nice massage for your pet! Rinse thoroughly. 5. Dry . Use old towels to remove as much moisture from your pet's fur as possible. But once you let your dog go, stand back - they'll definitely want to shake out as well. Then, let the warm sun dry the rest! Note: If your dog doesn't enjoy getting bathed at home, you could take them to a doggie spa to help them get used to the process.

A garden adds colour to your yard - and your life! But the maid service experts at MOLLY MAID note that if dogs or cats share your home, it's important to know that some common plants and flowers are actually toxic to animals. That doesn't mean you have to dig up the plants and get rid of them. But you do have to keep a watchful eye on your pets especially if they tend to be chewers and eat just about anything. If your pet digests any of these, symptoms can include: vomiting, diarrhea, excess salivation, loss of appetite, convulsions, hallucinations and/or kidney pain. If you think your pet is having a reaction, call your vet or take your pet to an emergency veterinarian clinic. Here's a list of plants that pose a health risk: Ivy Carnations Lilies Baby's Breath Tulips Aloe Vera Daffodils Morning Glories Poinsettias

Some days it feels like getting through your house cleaning checklist is the most time consuming job in the world! You keep stumbling on little problems that need extra attention. Here are some really helpful tips and tricks from the cleaning services experts at MOLLY MAID for taking care of some of those little 'big' problems. SCRATCHED DINING ROOM TABLE: Fix a scratch in your wood furniture by rubbing a walnut over it - any nick or scratch will soon be barely noticeable! DROP THE BACK OF AN EAR RING? If you can't find a tiny object that you dropped accidentally, place a nylon over the vacuum hose - there will be enough suction to help find the item without sucking it through the vacuum. CLEAN A SKINNY VASE: If your hand doesn't fit down a narrow vase, fill it halfway with water and drop in two effervescent antacid tablets such as Alka-Seltzer tablets to do the dirty work for you. These tablets actually contain baking soda.

Yesterday we communicated three steps to get started and tackle those larger cleaning jobs to get Mom's house sparkling; today we'll discuss those little extras that Mom will appreciate, so she can spend her time doing something she actually enjoys, instead of being stuck inside cleaning the house. 1. How to clean the toilet bowl - Mom will especially appreciate not having to do this dreaded chore! Pour a cup of white vinegar in the toilet bowl. A few swishes with the brush is all it takes for a natural green clean. 2. How to use vacuum parts - Those extra accessory tools that come with your vacuum actually do have a purpose! Using the proper vacuum tool can help quickly clean those crevices and fabric folds. The dusting brush tool can be used for lamp shades, hanging light fixtures and Venetian blinds, while the narrow furniture nozzle can be used to clean upholstered furniture, chairs and draperies. 3. How to leave a lasting impression - Once the house is glistening, give Mom some aroma therapy by lighting a scented candle or gathering some flowers from the garden. Early blooms like daffodils or tulips add a beautiful scent and a great pop of colour to brighten the room. Imagine Mom's sheer delight of coming home to a sparkling clean house. It's the perfect gift for Mother's Day!

Clearing clutter is actually the starting point to keeping the house clean. And it's easier than you think to strike it from your house cleaning checklist. Once you get rid of the things you don't use anymore, take a second look at how you are organizing items in your closets, etc. Here are great storage tips and tricks from the cleaning services experts at MOLLY MAID. 1. GIFT WRAP STORAGE SOLUTION: Store rolls of gift wrap by securing two flexible wires across the closet ceiling - about 4 inches down from the ceiling should be sufficient space. 2. HANG UP YOUR SPRAY BOTTLES: Double the storage space under your sink by installing a tension rod - and using it to hang up all your spray bottles. 3. ORGANIZE PERSONAL CARE ITEMS: Place a magnetic strip on the inside of your bathroom vanity door and use it to store tweezers, bobby pins and other small essentials.

There's always so much to do in the house - from keeping dust bunnies away to preparing snacks for the kids. Here are some time-saving tips and tricks from the cleaning services experts at MOLLY MAID. It's all about getting chores done so you can do the things you really want to do, like spending time with family and friends. Cleaning Strawberries? Remove the tops of strawberries by inserting a straw through the bottom and out the top - the leaves will come right off in the top of the straw. Cutting up an apple for your child's lunch? To keep it from turning brown, hold the apple together with an elastic band - less cut surface exposure will keep an apple fresher for longer. Looking for a fun and delicious way to serve fruit? Bake cookie 'bowls' for fruit by turning your muffin tin upside down and wrapping the cookie dough over the top. Bake as per the recipe directions. Let cool and remove carefully. These cookie bowls are perfect for ice cream too!

Change Your Bed-Making Routine for the Better – MOLLY MAID Offers a Great Idea

Airing out your bedding before you make the bed is now being highly recommended by health experts. That's because most people perspire when they sleep, and leaving the bedding exposed helps to dry it out. Opening a window to air out the room helps dry sheets too and it removes humidity. Fresh air actually prevents condensation problems and discourages dust mites, which love humidity. For your house cleaning checklist, here's how MOLLY MAID recommends making your bed from now on: When you first start cleaning the bedroom, open the window if possible Turn back all the covers on the bed After 20 minutes, the air in the room will have been exchanged and the mattress and sheets will be fresher and drier. Be sure to teach everyone in your family this new rule. Sticking to your regular house cleaning routine can be dull - why not add a bit of fun into the mix and dance around your room while it airs out!

Throw Away Your Kitchen Sponge – Another Cleaning Tip to Get Rid of Germs

Did you know that the highest concentration of bacteria in most homes is found in and around the kitchen sink? Bacteria love dampness and - as mentioned in our previous post Stop Spreading Germs in the Kitchen - bacteria require moisture to reproduce and survive... and in the kitchen, the sponge at the sink is often a culprit. A sponge is a moist environment and takes so long to dry. As a result, it's a playground for bacteria to grow and multiply. MOLLY MAID recommends trading in the kitchen sponge for a microfibre cloth. A microfibre cloth dries quickly when hung up after use and is also environmentally responsible because it lasts much longer than traditional cloths. They're also a great cleaning tool because they have special small fibres that are designed to get into surfaces, pores and crevices that traditional cloths can't reach. Your house cleaning checklist just got easier!

Spring cleaning is not just for your home anymore - you can spring clean your community too! Is there a park near your neighbourhood that is often littered with garbage? Wouldn't you like to see it cleaned up? In honour of Earth Day, organize a community cleanup! Working together for a healthy environment is a great opportunity to further develop relationships with your neighbours. Here are some ideas to help share your love of a cleaner and greener environment: Rally your Neighbours Talk to your neighbours and post signs (on recycled paper) letting your community know you'd like to organize a cleanup of the local park, school, community centre, etc. Consider putting a notice on your local town or community's website requesting volunteers - be sure to include the date and time of the cleanup. Add some extra Fun Make the cleanup into a fun scavenger hunt for the children who are participating; who can find a banana peel or a pop can? Add a bit of competition to the mix for the adults; who can fill their bag with garbage first or who can collect the most bags of garbage? Sort your Goodies Did you know that your local recycling driver could add up to three extra hours to their regular route because of improperly sorted recyclables? Set up containers labelled "garbage", "recycle" and "compost" and be sure to properly sort the items you collect - sorting could be a great way to get the children involved and to teach them about the importance of recycling. Enjoy a Potluck Lunch You'll build up an appetite after all the great work you've done, so celebrate your success by asking everyone to bring their favourite appetizer... you might want to wash your hands first! Mix and mingle with your neighbours and gain a stronger sense of community - and a greener earth! Why not turn this into a pledge to make 'spring cleaning your community' an annual event!

Do you ever use your dish drying towel as a hand towel as well? It's actually not a good idea because germs are often spread between the two towels. Remember, bacteria require moisture to multiply and survive. When you are drying your hands on a towel and then using that same damp towel to dry dishes... well, you never know what kinds of germs you are passing around. Instead, MOLLY MAID recommends that you have separate towels - one for drying dishes and one for drying wet hands. One way to differentiate is to use different colour towels, or different patterned towels, for different functions. For example, use a blue plaid towel for dishes and a pink flowered towel for your hands. This is just another great cleaning tip from MOLLY MAID that you can use every day!

Many homeowners rely on a professional cleaning company. But there are lots of ways to keep your home clean and fresh between visits. Keeping the garbage can and compost container germ-free is one of those chores you need to consider. It's one thing to take the garbage or compost out to get rid of smells, but the container itself needs to be disinfected regularly because bacteria and germs are likely lurking! MOLLY MAID recommends wiping down your garbage can and compost container with a natural disinfectant, like rubbing alcohol. How to do it: Pour some rubbing alcohol onto a microfibre cloth Wipe down your garbage can and compost container - inside and out. Do this at least once a week to help get rid of germs and to control the smells that garbage and compost can sometimes leave behind. Keep an eye out for more great cleaning tips to help stop the spread of germs in your kitchen.

As part of your spring cleaning this year, why not initiate this new cleaning ritual: wash your pet's food and water bowls every time you fill up the water bowl with fresh water. Hand-wash the dishes each time you refill them - MOLLY MAID recommends using regular dish detergent if you wash them by hand - then put the dishes into the dishwasher once a week.

When you think about it, you are constantly touching things and picking up germs, and those germs are then transported to anything else you touch. For a lot of people, their smart phone and other electronic devices are used on a daily basis, and cleaning these devices should be a part of your regular house cleaning checklist. Smart phones, computer keyboards, remote controls, telephones, and other electronic devices are a haven for germs. MOLLY MAID recommends wiping them with rubbing alcohol as an easy and effective way to disinfect them. Rubbing alcohol is a natural disinfectant found in most homes. How to do it: Dab some rubbing alcohol onto a microfibre cloth - do not directly pour rubbing alcohol on any electronic device Carefully wipe down the device. Be sure to do this regularly. Rubbing alcohol won't damage the electronic device when used this way - and it will get rid of germs that accumulate on these devices that are used daily.

How to Reduce Germs in Your Home - Here’s a Great Green Cleaning Tip

Many people use the same cloth in different rooms when they are doing their spring cleaning, and regular cleaning. But MOLLY MAID recommends using separate microfibre cloths when cleaning the kitchen and bathroom specifically, to avoid cross contamination. Germs love the kitchen and bathroom - because of food preparation, damp surfaces and dark moist corners. When you use the same cloth in these rooms, you may be transporting germs from one room to the other. How to avoid this? MOLLY MAID recommends using a different colour cloth in each room (so pink for the kitchen, for example, and blue for the bathroom). When you have to wipe up a spill on the floor in either room, use a paper towel (not a dish towel) and recycle it when you're done. Watch for more great tips from MOLLY MAID on how to reduce germs in your home.

With the spring cleaning season well underway, it's a joy to open the windows and let the fresh air in! Taking care of filters in your appliances is one of those important cleaning tips that help keep the air in your house clean and fresh for you and your family. Clogged filters can't do their job properly, and an old filter might actually be circulating bad air and bacteria. Vacuum cleaner: Cleaning or changing a dirty vacuum cleaner filter will improve suction power and can help eliminate dust particles from the air when you vacuum. Check your owner's manual for how-to- information. Furnace: Even though the weather is changing and the furnace is being used less often, it's still important to replace filters regularly, usually every season. If you have a pet, best practice would be to replace your filter every month. Air conditioner: Air conditioners also have filters and whether you have central air or a window unit, it's important to visually inspect the filter and clean it if necessary before you start using it again. A dirty filter can cause your air conditioner to malfunction. Remember to follow the manufacturer's instructions on how to clean or replace the filter.
