4 Simple Steps to Rid your Carpet of Salt Stains

Our northern climate makes winter travel a challenge. Slippery conditions on sidewalks, walkways, driveways and roads make it necessary to rely on deicing salts. But salt tracked indoors is tough on floors and stain carpets and rugs if left untreated. Looking for a solution that’s not only effective but inexpensive? Our do-it-yourself salt stain solution will restore rugs and carpets to their former glory!

STEP 1: In a spray bottle, bowl, or bucket, mix a solution of equal parts white vinegar and warm water. While the smell of vinegar isn’t very appealing, it’s a powerful natural cleaning agent.

STEP 2: Spray the solution onto the stain. If you’re using a bowl or bucket, pour a small amount onto the area. Lightly scrub the stain with a small brush or agitate the carpet fibers with your fingers. The goal here is to stir up the salt, not embed it deeper.

STEP 3: Blot the stain with a clean, dry rag. Dab rather than scrub to absorb the salty stain. Use different sections of the cloth to dry the stained area as much as possible. If you have a wet-dry vacuum, it will not only suck up the salt stain but also the smell.

STEP 4: Let it air dry. The smell of vinegar can be off-putting, so open your windows or run a fan to help the area dry faster. Once it’s completely dry, the smell should disappear along with the stain.

If the stain lingers, repeat as many times as needed. Salt can be stubborn, but there’s no reason why this vinegar cleaning method shouldn’t work.

Note. Using doormats inside and out, front and back can help! Encourage the whole family to stomp their feet on the doormat before going into the house to knock snow, slush and salt off footwear.
