When was the last time you gave your work-horse freezer a deep clean? It’s not usually a top priority with our hectic schedules, right? Not only is it a time-consuming task, but it’s also a finicky one too. It’s nothing short of an engineering feat trying to keep everything frozen while simultaneously scrubbing and scraping. Time to stop the excuses; January is the perfect time to clean out your freezer! Here’s why:
It’s a New Year
A good time to replace batteries in fire alarms, the filter in the furnace and, of course, the water filter in your fridge. If your freezer doesn’t have a built-in thermometer, check the temperature to ensure it’s set for optimal freezing. Most food will last longer if the freezer temperature is -10 to -20 degrees Fahrenheit.
It’s Time to Tame the Leftovers
Don’t let the leftover turkey, or the cookie dough that never made it to the oven, get lost at the back of the freezer. Compost all the items that have freezer burn and cook up those items that don’t. Consider creating a freezer inventory to keep track of what’s in there and make meal prep a snap!
It’s Time to Hibernate
Let’s be honest, December is a month of celebration and gluttony. So, January is the perfect time to reset the clock, eat healthier and smaller portions. Homemade meals are great for our waistlines and our wallets. Stock the freezer with lots of delicious comfort food favourites and keep some fresh portions in the fridge. Being organized in the kitchen means there’s more time to get cozy and warm.
It’s the Coldest and Longest Month
Take advantage of the cold outside to store frozen items on your porch or back deck while you clean. Simply load items from the freezer into an empty box or grocery crate and take them outside. You can take your time ensuring you get into each and every nook and cranny with no fear your items are defrosting. All you need is a few hours of free time, a microfibre cloth and a spray bottle filled with equal parts of vinegar and water to get the job done!
