Laundry Hacks 101: Turn Every Single Load into the Perfect Wash's featured image

Laundry is a necessary chore, but sometimes it can feel like a real battle against stains, wrinkles, and that mysterious black gunk hiding in the washing machine gasket. That’s why we’re sharing our top pro laundry tips to elevate your washes and keep your clothes looking their best.

Master the Sort

Separating clothes is laundry 101 but taking it a step further can work wonders. We all sort by colour (darks, lights, delicates) to prevent colour bleeding.  But do you consider fabric weight too? Washing heavy towels with light delicates will damage the lighter items. Always read and follow care labels to remind yourself of special washing instructions.

Less is More

Do not overstuff your washer! Clothes need space to tumble and agitate effectively for a thorough clean. Overcrowding can lead to poor cleaning, lingering odours, wrinkles or worse: heavy wet towels can stop the cycle in its track! There’s nothing worse than soaking wet towels that you have to wring by hand.

Decode Detergent

Choosing the right detergent makes a big difference. Opt for a high-efficiency (HE) detergent if you have an HE washer. Consider using a gentle detergent for delicates and a colour-safe option for vibrant clothes. Of course, following the recommended amount is key – too much detergent can leave residue on clothes and attract dirt.

Embrace the Power of Pre-Treatment

For stubborn stains, pre-treatment can be a miracle worker. Apply a stain remover directly to the affected area before tossing it in the washer. Follow the product instructions for optimal results.

Front-Loader Gasket Gunk

Front-load washers are fantastic at cleaning clothes, but their design can trap moisture in the door gasket which leads to a slimy black buildup – a breeding ground for mold and mildew. Here’s how to fight back:

  • After each wash, leave the washer door ajar to allow moisture to evaporate.
  • Regularly wipe down the rubber gasket with a damp cloth and a mild disinfectant solution.
  • For stubborn grime, the Home Appliance experts at Maytag recommend using a baking soda paste or white vinegar solution. Apply, let sit, then scrub gently and wipe clean.
