Ready for Back To School? It’s Time to Restock Lunch Box Supplies's featured image

Whether you pack lunches in the morning, or the night before, knowing where to find the lunch box supplies is the key to success. Designating a cupboard or drawer for those items is the first step. But, don’t stop there! The following tips will make this daily chore quick and easy:

PURGE

Cracked container, ill-fitting lids, and snap locks that are wonky are guaranteed to cause spills. Not only will the spills make backpacks messy, but clothes will likely get dirty too. A well-sealed container not only eliminates leaks, it also ensures lunches stay fresh. Make sure to inspect all your lunch box supplies, and recycle everything that’s damaged. Once you’ve sorted out your supplies, give your storage area a good clean.  Simply add a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water to a spray bottle. Spritz and wipe down the area with a microfibre cloth.

RESTOCK

Lunch boxes come in all shapes, sizes and materials. It’s easy to become overwhelmed when you’re buying everything from travel mugs, thermoses, salad containers, and bento boxes. Stainless steel, ceramic, plastic or bamboo are popular re-usable container options. Adults can also add glass jars to their arsenal. Mason jars are the perfect choice for a packed salad. And, don’t fret over a lost lid or two, silicone stretch lids will save the day! They’re reusable, durable and expand to fit various shaped and sized containers.

RECONSIDER

As we all try to lessen our carbon footprint, consider eco-friendly lunch supplies. Cloth bags, beeswax wrap, cloth napkins and paper straws are great options. More and more schools continue to adopt litter-less lunch policies, so it’s time to reconsider all packaging when shopping for snacks. Try and avoid anything wrapped in plastic, such as cheese strings and individually wrapped cookies and granola bars.

PRO TIP: Dried fruit and vegetable snacks, like fruit leathers and veggie chips, are all the rage, but the garbage created from their single-use packaging is unfortunate. Consider investing in a fruit dehydrator, or rent one from a tool library and batch dehydrate. Then simply pack snacks in reusable containers.
