Time to Save your Wooden Floors's featured image

Our wooden floors often take quite a beating during the winter months. No matter how hard we try, water, snow and salt always seem to find their way throughout our homes, and onto our wooden floors during the winter. Now that spring is here, these floor cleaners and strategies will help bring your wooden floors back to their original glory!

Laminate Floor Cleaner

Cleaning solutions: 3 parts water, 1 part white vinegar and 1 dash of liquid dish soap.

  • Vacuum your laminate flooring with the wooden floor attachment – is it actually called “wooden floor attachment”? We should call it by it’s actual name.
  • Mix the water, vinegar and soap cleaning solution into a spray bottle and lightly spray your damp mop. Clean the floor starting in the far corner, cleaning left to right, and work your way back towards the door. Buff your floor using a dry mop for a streak free finish.
  • Refrain from using string or sponge mops on your laminate floors, as these kinds of mops use a lot of water and can damage your flooring. Also, make sure to dry up any water spills immediately.

Hardwood Floors

Cleaning solution: 1 cup of white vinegar, 3 cups of water, 10 drops of tea tree oil, 10 drops of lemon essential oil.

  • Vacuum or sweep your hardwood floor to remove any surface dirt.
  • Next, mop your hardwood floor with a lightly damp mop, cleaning with the grain of the wood. Don’t be overly generous with your cleaning solution, as using too much can damage your flooring.
  • Buff floor dry with a dry mop.

Vinyl Floors

Cleaning solution: 1 cup of white vinegar and 3.5 litres of water.

  • Vacuumor dry mop your vinyl floors first to remove any dirt and dust from the surface. Make sure you clean under the furniture, in each corner of the room, and along baseboards as well.
  • Next, dip your mop into the water and vinegar cleaning solution, rinse thoroughly and begin mopping your floor. Make sure to start in the far corner and work your way backwards towards the door, moving from left to right. Rinse the mop frequently.
