June 21st is the summer solstice, which marks the beginning of summer and spending more time outside. Here are ways to salute the sun and this special day, which also happens to be the longest day of the year.
- Sit outside and read a book. This is a good way to get connected with the sun and nature.
- Commit to be healthier. Summer is a great time to eat more fresh foods and find one exercise that you love to do – and do it. For example, the whole family can bike or hike together.
- Honour the sun. If you enjoy doing yoga, start doing Sun Salutations. Begin on the morning of the summer solstice and aim to make it a daily habit from this time on.
- Update your look. Go through your clothescloset. Send unwanted clothing items to your local charity, a friend or to the rag bag. Visit your favourite clothing store and choose one or two new items.
- Throw a party with a bonfire. A bonfire is part of the tradition of the summer solstice. Just be sure to choose a location where it is both safe and permitted to burn a bonfire.
- Travel. Next year, consider spending summer solstice away from home, at one of the key destinations where the summer solstice has been celebrated for centuries. Britain's Stonehenge is a must for the avid observer of the summer solstice. Two other places where people like to celebrate the summer solstice are Sedona in Arizona and Cairo.
