Save your Shower Curtain from Soap Scum & Mildew's featured image

In the late nineteenth century, “bath days” were a big production in most households. The bathtub – a metal-lined wooden container – was brought into the kitchen for the weekly event. The tub was filled with hot water boiled on the stove, and everyone in the family who needed a good scrubbing took a turn. Nowadays, a quick shower is preferred by most – thanks to the advancement of bathroom utilities!

However, regardless of the convenience and ease the shower has made to personal hygiene, keeping the shower curtain clean is less convenient, so it can become grubby quickly, sometimes overnight. Fight mildew and soap scum buildup with the following homemade remedies.

Use Baking Soda to Remove Mildew
1. Make a paste of baking soda and water (three parts baking soda to one part water).
2. Using a microfibre cloth, rub over the mildew until it comes off.
3. Rinse clean with water.

Use Vinegar to Remove Soap Scum
1. Mix a solution of half vinegar and half water.
2. Spray the inside of the shower curtain or liner with the vinegar solution while the curtain is stretched as straight as possible.
3. Allow the spray to sit for a few minutes and then wipe heavily soiled areas with a damp sponge.
4. Rinse with water.

Easier still, take the curtain down and wash it in the washing machine. Be sure to wash it with a few towels so the curtain liner doesn’t scrunch up in the wash. This removes soap scum and mildew.

PRO TIP: Wear rubber-soled shoes when you clean the bathroom in order to protect yourself from slipping and falling.
