Marigolds Repel Pests and Mosquitoes
Marigolds are super-super powered garden heroes. Not only do they repel mosquitoes, but they also repel insects that prey on edibles such as tomato plants. Don’t believe us, here’s a quote from the Old Farmer’s Almanac to prove our point: “Farmers and gardeners have long known that marigolds make important companion plants all over the garden.” For more about this powerhouse beauty, check out the Farmer’s Almanac! Plant them outdoors to keep pests away from your tomato plants, or keep them in a pot near windows to repel mosquitoes.
Citronella, Citronella, Let Down your Air!
Nearly every mosquito-repelling candle, incense, bug spray and mosquito-repelling product on the market contains citronella oil. But did you know that the most effective way to keep mosquitoes at bay is with the plant in its natural form? Plant it in the ground around the front and back of your property, or grow it in planters. Not all citronella plants are equal, so make sure to speak with a garden centre specialist to ensure that you’re buying a true variety.
Lavender Boot Camp
You may have not noticed, but nearly all natural bug repellents on the market contain lavender oil. That’s because the fragrant plant, known for its calming and sleep-inducing properties doesn’t just calm humans, it calms mosquitoes too. Although not every human likes the scent of lavender, the mosquito world entirely despises it. Plant as much lavender as you can in your garden, or grow it in containers. If you’re the belle or beau of the ball at any and all outdoor events, consider spraying yourself with a DIY Lavender Mosquito Repellent before you head outdoors. All you need is a pocket-sized spray bottle filled with 3 ounces of distilled water and 30 drops of lavender essential oil.
