A leather couch is often an expensive investment, so it’s important to take good care of it. The residential cleaning experts at MOLLY MAID recommend the following tips to help keep your leather couch clean and in pristine condition.
Deep cleaning:
- Vacuum the surface of your leather couch with a soft brush attachment, making sure to remove all of the crumbs from the crevices. Remove your cushions as well and clean underneath them.
- Create a cleaning solution by mixing one cup of water and one cup of white vinegar. Make sure to test the solution on a small, discreet area of your couch first; letting the area dry completely, before using it to clean your whole couch.
- Dip a microfibre cloth into the solution and wring it out so that the cloth is damp and not completely wet.
- Wipe the entire couch, starting from the top and working your way to the bottom. Rinse the cloth in the cleaning solution when necessary.
- Dry the couch with a dry microfibre cloth. Do not use any artificial heating components, such as a blow dryer, to dry the couch as this will dehydrate the leather and cause it to fade.
- To condition your couch, mix one cup of white vinegar and two cups of linseed or flax seed oil. Use a clean microfibre cloth to apply the mixture in slow, circular motions. Leave your couch to dry overnight.
- The next morning, buff your sofa with a clean, dry microfibre cloth, to restore the leathers shine.
Regular up-keep:
- For regular weekly cleaning, wipe your couch with a dry microfibre cloth. If the couch is used quite frequently, consider vacuuming the surface weekly using a soft brush attachment.
- Attend to any spills on the sofa immediately, to prevent the spill from leaving a stain. Use a dry microfibre cloth to carefully blot the liquid. Do not wipe the spill across the surface, as this may cause it to stain the surrounding area as well.
- Keep your couch at least two feet away from any heat source. Exposing your leather sofa to heat and sunlight; can age and dry the leather, leading to discoloration and cracking.
