Cleaning isn’t just a VIP treatment reserved for kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms. Once in a while, we have to remember to clean our bills too! A survey of Canadian electricity bills published in 2017 concluded that Canadians keep paying more and more for hydro. But don’t despair, by consistently using our easy bill cleaning tips, you’ll save money, help the environment, and defer wear and tear on your clothes and appliances.
Summer vs. Winter
Summer and winter hydro rates are always lowest on weekends and on statutory holidays, so if you can, do laundry on Saturdays and Sundays. But this is tough for weekend warriors who are busy with cottage time, outdoor adventures and socializing. Alternately, schedule laundry time between 7 P.M. and 7 A.M. and you’ll benefit from the same savings.
Hang Dry
Year round you can save your clothes and appliances from wear and tear, and reduce your electricity bills by drying your clothes on indoor clothes racks. If you live in a house with some yard space, get creative come the spring, and figure out how to hang up a permanent or temporary clothesline. Check out our Drying Racks 101 blog for more eco-drying ideas which can be used indoors and outdoors.
Eco Cycles, Settings and Soaps
Study your appliance manuals! These days, all washing machines, dryers and dishwashers are designed with energy-saving features like temperature gauges that reduce the wash and rinse temperatures, lower water consumption options and shorter wash times. Plus, do some research when buying eco rinse aids and eco detergents, as some are more environmentally friendly than others. DIY options can definitely save you lots of money.
PRO TIP: Did you know that there are government programs that can help you reduce your electricity bills? If you live in Ontario, you can find rate reduction programs or search for a program in your home province!
