4 Clever Ways to Celebrate your Books
Was it Cicero who said, a room without books is like a body without a soul? Books give a space endless character. They welcome us home after a long day, open our minds to new worlds, and help us escape the everyday. The options for storing books are endless, overwhelming if you’re just getting started. Here’s a few of our favourites.
Think Big
Build your own library if only on one wall. Floor to ceiling bookshelves are dramatic and quite impressive. Add a library ladder to finish off the effect and to reach the top shelf. Doorways are no problem, simply add some shelves above the door and frame it with books. What could be better!
Mix & Match
We all know that built-in bookshelves are a great way to frame a fireplace or flat-screen TV. Both functional and stylish, it’s the perfect solution for a small space. And, while some bibliophiles would object, adding a few knick knacks and family photos add some fun.
Window Seat
Natural light and a comfy pillow make a window seat the perfect spot to enjoy a good book. Whether tucked inside a dormer window, wedged between two bookcases or upon a bookcase bench, any book lover will agree it adds a little classical romance to your home decor.
Get Creative
You can find possibilities in any empty space without creating clutter. Remember a well organized bookshelf is like art. Try open shelves for a lighter, more modern feel. Consider using a bookcase, accessible from both sides, to create separate spaces in an open floor plan or studio apartment.
Fun Fact: Iceland publishes more books per capita than any other country! Most of those books sell from September to November. Why? Because in Iceland books are exchanged on Christmas Eve as part of Jolabokaflod, the Christmas Book Flood. Once they’ve opened their gifts, most Icelanders spend the rest of the night in bed reading and eating chocolate.
