Keep your home clean and fresh by using leftovers. Fight excess food waste by repurposing food items you thought were destined for the garbage. Here are four tips to get you started:
- Clean the BBQ grate with an onion. Instead of throwing a ‘less than fresh’ onion into the compost, why not use it to clean your BBQ grill? Simply pierce the top outer layer of the onion with a fork, and use the cut flat surface of the onion to scrub the grill. The acids in the onion will help break up the grit and grime on your grill. It also adds a bit of seasoning to your grill as well! For the best results, make sure to heat your BBQ grill to 400˚ F, prior to cleaning.
- Potato peels are a great natural cleaning product that can remove that rust from your cutlery. Simply dip a potato peel into a bowl of baking soda, and scrub the rusted area. Continue scrubbing the area until all of the rust has been removed. Finally, remove the residue with a microfibre cloth.
- Basil is a great natural remedy to keep pesky fruit flies at bay. Simply add a few pieces of fresh basil to the fruit bowl in your kitchen. The strong scent and oil found in basil will help deter fruit flies and is a simple way to add a fresh scent to your home.
- Instead of reaching for your lemon polish, why not use a little bit of black tea to polish your wooden furniture? As we know all too well, a pot of tea often goes unfinished. Before emptying the teapot, simply dip a microfibre cloth into cooled tea, and begin polishing your furniture. The tannic acid in black tea not only removes residue from the wood, but also restores its natural shine.
Happy cleaning!
