Vinyl Record Bookends
Materials:
- Old vinyl records
- Baking pan
- Kettle of boiling water
- 8” x 8” bamboo cutting board
How to:
- Select a record, and determine which side of the record you would like to display.
- Place your baking pan flat on the table.
- Hold the record upright inside the baking pan. Make sure the side of the record that you want to display is facing outward.
- Continue holding the record while slowing pouring boiling water over the bottom half of the record – the record will start to become malleable. Fill the baking pan with about an inch of boiling water.
- Gently press the edge of the record down into the pan, until the ‘melted’ crease reaches just below the label.
- Once the submerged portion of the record is soft, remove it from the water and place it on the table, while still holding the record upright.
- Quickly use your bamboo cutting board to flatten the creased portion of your record until it is completely flat and sturdy.
- Once it is dry, use a dry microfibre cloth to give it a once over buff. If the creased portion of the record is not completely flat, repeat the process and try again.
Personalized Coasters
Materials:
- White ceramic tiles around 4.5” squares
- Photos
- Mod podge
- Acrylic sealer
- Wax paper
- Foam paint brush
- Non-scratch felt pads
How to:
- Cut your photos so that you have about half a centimetre of the white tile showing on all sides.
- Apply a thin layer of mod podge to the tile and place the photo in the centre of the tile. Press photo down gently, from top to bottom, to ensure you get rid of any air bubbles. Allow the mod podge to dry completely.
- Next, use your foam paint brush and carefully apply a coat of mod podge, from left to right, over the image. Allow the layer to dry completely then, repeat the process a second time.
- Once the coasters have dried completely, lay them on wax paper and spray with acrylic sealer. Allow the coaster to dry completely, then repeat the process a second time.
- Once the acrylic sealer has dried, apply non-scratch felt pads to the underside of your coasters to prevent them from scratching any surfaces.
