Drying your towels and whites in the sun is one of the best things about spring and summer. That sun-bleach-clean (sans bleach) is not only easier on sensitive skin but also much better for the environment! It helps cut down your electric usage and helps you get outdoors quicker because you’re not stuck inside waiting for the dryer cycle to finish. And, let’s be honest, whether on the line or on a clotheshorse, nothing beats the clean fresh smell that comes from drying clothes outside.
Ready to get started? All you need is a little sunshine and these tips:
- To keep clothes soft, hang clothes out during the early morning, or in the evening when the sun is not so hot.
- To lessen wrinkles, shake three times. Then, hang items flat in the sun to dry. The sun’s heat can be as good as an iron, allowing you to fold directly off the line and place straight in the drawer.
- To avoid stiff towels, take them off the line when they’re slightly damp. Run them through the drier for a few minutes to keep them soft and fluffy.
- To avoid peg marks, peg them to the line by the armpits or collar. On the flip side, consider avoiding pegs altogether. Simply hang items off the line on coat hangers.
- If the forecast calls for rain, hang your washing on a clotheshorse so it can be moved into or out of the sun. Plus, a clotheshorse is lower to the ground, so kids can help hang and collect the washing!
- Rumour has it hanging bottoms by their top and tops by their bottom helps items dry more quickly.
- Peg socks together on the line so that they don’t get lost!
PRO TIP: Sun-bleaching is particularly good for drying your kitchen tea towels. Not only will they be whitened naturally by the sun, but the rays also help kill bacteria.
