The Secret to Keeping your Home Warm and your Wallet Full!'s featured image

Did you know that heating accounts for more than 50% of your annual electricity bill? So it only makes sense to ask the experts for some energy saving tips. Toronto Hydro’s fall to-do list has all the answers to make your home more energy efficient and help you use electricity more wisely this winter.

  1. Time it right. Put lights on timers to cut waste and add security – especially helpful with outside holiday lights.
  2. Bust the dust. Vacuum refrigerator coils and intake grills to help maximize efficiency.
  3. Maximize airflow. Clean kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans for proper ventilation and to prevent mold.
  4. Go with a pro. Schedule a heating tune-up, and be sure to change or clean your filter once a month in heating season.
  5. Check and replace. Add fresh batteries to smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
  6. Set your thermostat. Keep at 20°C when you’re awake, 19°C at night and 16°C when you’re away. In some provinces, you may qualify for a $100 rebate for a smart thermostat.
  7. Clean mineral buildup. Remove deposits that reduce the efficiency of showerheads and faucet aerators.

Baking tip: If you do a lot of baking during the holidays, keep in mind that the stove creates a lot of heat which competes with your other heat sources. On days when you’re batch baking, turn down your thermostat from the moment you turn your oven on, and at least a half hour after you’ve turned it off.

Hosting tip: The more guests that arrive in our homes, the more human heat we create – naturally! If it’s just two of you for dinner, no need to touch the thermostat, but if there’s four or more, go ahead and turn down the heat. Offer people warm cozy socks if you’ve got laminated or hardwood floors.
