Cleaning Mistakes That Make Your Home Dirtier's featured image

With the arrival of spring, the snap of rubber gloves can be heard across the country. It’s time to open the windows, let in the fresh air, and clean away every reminder of winter. But, before you get started, beware of the Dirty Half-Dozen. These cleaning mistakes will actually make your home dirtier than it was before you started!

Overlooking High Traffic Touch Points

Faucets, handles, and doorknobs are touched several times a day making them a hotbed of bacteria, so don’t omit them from your cleaning routine. On a daily basis aim to keep them clean with a disinfectant wipe, or a homemade spray of equal parts vinegar and water, to keep germs at bay.

Spraying Polish On The Furniture

Spritzing furniture polish directly onto wood furniture can cause discolouration. It can also cause an excess amount of build-up on surfaces, which will require even more elbow grease to remove. Instead, spray your cloth with cleaner and then rub the cloth on your wood and dusty surfaces.

Using The Same Rag in Every Room

Having a different microfibre cloth for every room avoids cross-contamination. To avoid re-depositing dirt and grime around the room, fold your cloth in half and then again to give yourself eight clean sides. As you work around the room, refold for a clean cloth on every surface.

Rushing Tile and Grout Cleaner

Patience is required for any product—especially in the bathroom. Give tub and tile cleaners a few minutes to work before wiping them away. This will help soften and dissolve soap scum and stains, so less elbow grease is needed.

Ignoring Your Vacuum Bag

Cleaning out your vacuum bag regularly is a must. Otherwise, you end up just spreading the dirt around instead of actually cleaning. For bagless vacuums, empty the canister after every use.

Neglecting Reusable Bags

Reusable bags need to be washed regularly—especially grocery bags. Not only can they carry food bacteria, but they’re also tossed in the trunk of the car or placed on the ground while we search for keys or wait for transit. Then they get placed on our kitchen counters as we are unpacking the groceries at home. Consider washing your food-specific reusable bags in your weekly laundry.
