With some messes, you just don’t know where to start. With a dirty window or door screen, it’s tempting to start with a power wash, followed with a heavy-duty scrub, or better yet, throw it out and buy a new one. But with a little bit of elbow grease and no time constraints, you can make your dirty old screens look new again. Take note that some screens are easier to pop out than others, below are steps to take if your screens can’t be removed.
Vacuum Clean
In our line of work, there’s nothing we haven’t vacuumed, and that includes window screens and door screens. You can either attach a soft brush attachment, or remove all attachments, and gently vacuum both sides of the screen (if logistics permit). Vacuuming will remove dust, dead flies, cobwebs and hairs. If you’re using a ladder to get to out-of-reach windows, make sure you have someone spotting you.
Toothbrush Clean
If you’ve never cleaned your screens, they may have a soft layer of grime on them, so dead flies, hairs and debris may be stuck inside the soft metal strands. You can either use a toothpick to poke out the offending guck or use an old toothbrush to brush out whatever got stuck. Vacuum up any dirt you’ve been able to remove and vacuum screen again. Microfibre Cloth Clean
Just like there’s nothing we haven’t vacuumed, there’s nothing we haven’t taken a microfibre cloth to! Fill your sink or a bucket with warm water and a tablespoon of vinegar. Dunk your microfibre cloth into the bathwater and squeeze out water until it’s not soaking wet. Gently scrub your window or porch screen from top to bottom, left to right. You’ll immediately see that your microfibre cloth will be covered in dirt. Rinse cloth until dirt is gone. Dunk in soapy water and repeat these steps until there’s no more dirt sticking to your cloth. Using a dry microfibre cloth, pat your screen dry.
