Keeping Alexa & Your Google Home Device Dust-free's featured image

Alexa, Is it going to rain today? Ok Google, what sound does a whale make? These are just a few of the more popular queries asked of our smart speakers. Canadians across the country rely on them to perform a variety of tasks from streaming music, to setting alarms, playing games and calculating pounds into ounces. According to the latest Sneak Peek Report study by Media Technology Monitor, one in eight Canadians owns a smart speaker device making it the fastest-growing tech segment in Canada. So, the most popular question we get here at Molly Maid, how do you clean them?

Dry Clean

Google, Amazon and Apple recommend wiping dirt and stains away with a dry cloth. Discouraging users to stay away from window cleaners, household cleaners, compressed air or aerosol sprays, so as to be absolutely sure not to damage the speaker. But, a dry cloth doesn’t always do the trick.

Gravity

May the force be with you! Lay a small towel on the ground to collect dust. Now, simply turn your smart speaker upside down and give it a gentle shake & tap to remove loose surface debris.

Toothpick

A toothpick is perfect for removing dirt trapped in the device’s seams and buttons. Just carefully run it around the edge of the button dislodging dust and debris as you go. Never use a knife to clean buttons on your smart speaker. They’re much too sharp and may damage the surface.

Lint Roller

If you have a smart speaker with any cloth parts, try using a lint roller to trap dirt and grime. Since the fabric is woven, a lint roller will stop the dirt from being pushed deeper into the cloth. You may not clean all the gunk, but you will get everything lingering on top.

Damp Microfibre Cloth

Microfibre cloths are four times more effective than ordinary cleaning cloths with more than 200,000 fibres per square inch. Depending on the stain, you may be lightly scrubbing very gently for longer than you’d like, but the upside is that you avoid liquid cleaners or water which will damage your smart speaker.
