Mildew Loves Our Bathrooms Especially in the Summer's featured image

Summer’s here and with it comes hot, humid days. The combination of heat and moisture create a breeding ground for mold and mildew, which can leave your bathroom looking and smelling unpleasant. Here are some simple tips to prevent them from taking over and keep your bathroom fresh all summer long.

Understanding the Enemy

Mold and mildew are types of fungi that thrive in damp environments. They can appear as black, green, or brown spots on walls, ceilings, grout and shower curtains. While mold can sometimes cause respiratory problems, mildew is primarily an aesthetic issue. However, preventing both is key to maintaining a healthy and pleasant bathroom environment.

Step Up Your Ventilation

Proper ventilation is crucial. After showering or bathing, you can easily minimize excess moisture by opening the bathroom window and turning on the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes. If you don’t have a window, leave the bathroom door wide open, and open the window that’s closest. Installing a bathroom exhaust fan will make a world of difference and be sure to splurge on a model with a timer. This will ensure the room gets completely dried out.

Let There Be Light!

Sunlight is a natural enemy of mold and mildew. Whenever possible, open blinds or curtains to allow sunlight to penetrate the bathroom. This not only helps dry surfaces but also creates a brighter, more welcoming space.

Squeegee Away the Enemy

After showering, use a squeegee to remove water droplets from shower walls, tiles and glass doors. This simple step can significantly reduce the moisture available for mold and mildew to grow.

Declutter for Better Airflow

Minimize clutter, especially around the shower and bathtub. Stacks of towels, bath products, and other items can trap moisture and create stagnant air, perfect conditions for mold and mildew growth.

Embrace the Power of Baking Soda

This versatile household staple is also a great mold and mildew fighter. Sprinkle baking soda on damp surfaces like shower floors or bathtub liners. Leave it for 30 minutes, then scrub with a brush and rinse thoroughly.

Cleaning Routine is Key

Regular cleaning with a disinfectant solution specifically designed for bathrooms is essential. Pay close attention to areas prone to moisture build-up like grout lines, shower corners and around the sink.
