Today’s queries are dishwasher related.

Q: Why canʼt I use regular dishwashing liquid in my dishwasher?

A: Hand dishwashing detergent isnʼt formulated to work in automatic dishwashers. The suds created by this type of detergent are much too sudsy! They would literally smother the water action that’s necessary for cleaning effectively. In fact, using dishwashing liquid in the dishwasher could cause an overflow, leaving you with suds all over the floor. Best to stick with a detergent made specifically for the dishwasher.

If you find you’re out of dishwasher pods, distilled white vinegar is a good substitute until you can get to the store. Vinegar is an acid and will cut through any greasy residue on the dishes. Simply fill a bowl with a half cup of vinegar and place it on the top rack. The force of the water will distribute it during the wash cycle to other dishes.

Q: Can I put non-stick cookware in the dishwasher?

A: Many items are dishwasher safe, but it’s always best to play it safe and check with the manufacturer of the cookware for cleaning instructions.

What would we do without our dishwasher? Not only does it do the dishes for you, but it’s also a great place to hide dirty dishes when unexpected company is on its way and you need to tidy up fast. For more ways to get the best results from your dishwasher, click here.
