Swapping out shorts and tees for bulky sweaters and jeans is not an easy task. It takes skill to do it well, and a few tips from the pros like Kim K doesn’t hurt.
Refresh Your Closet Like the Hollywood Elite
Superstar Kim Kardashian started her rise to fame by organizing closets. It’s true. Years before she signed on to do Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Kim cleaned out closets for the rich and famous. It all began when visiting her godparents’ house, Sugar Ray Leonard and his wife, Bernadette. “Bernadette’s closet was massive and had so much stuff in it,” says Kim. But, it was a mess and needed an overhaul. So, they spent the rest of the night doing just that.
It didn’t take long before others in the community heard of Kim’s ability to transform an everyday run-of-the-mill walk-in into a dream closet. Soon her client list included Catherine Bach, Nicole Richie, Paris Hilton, Brandy, Serena Williams, Cindy Crawford, Sugar Ray Leonard and his wife, Rob Lowe and his wife, and Kenny G and his wife.
While a seasonal switch may not be a concern in sunny California, we’re sure Kim would agree it’s the perfect time to clean up your closets. But, fair warning, the transition from summer to fall has its challenges! Your space may seem drastically reduced with bulky sweaters, jeans, and boots. Don’t panic, just find your inner Kardashian and with a few tips, you’ll be on your way!
Start with a Blank Canvas
Take everything out of your closet to get a real sense of the space. This allows you to imagine it redefined.
Purge Items That Don’t Fit
Weight fluctuation affects us all and is common from season to season. So, try on every item in your closet. If you don’t like how it looks or it’s cutting off circulation, it’s time to purge. This includes summer clothes headed for storage.
Post Unwanted Items
That’s what Kim would do! As a young entrepreneur, she took whatever her clients didn’t want and sold them on eBay. You may want to start with Poshmark or Facebook Market.
Organize by Category
It’s the oldest trick in the closet-cleaning book! Skirts, pants, sweaters, blouses, jeans – organize all of your pieces by category. This lets you see everything at a glance, helps you mix & match, and looks orderly.
Stack Foldables
A closet design with open shelving for sweaters helps in the fall. As well as a dresser below hanging items for thick socks, tights, scarves, and any undergarments. The key is to be able to see everything, otherwise, you may not remember to wear it.
Consistency is Crucial
If you’re really looking for that Hollywood closet feel, the look is important. Case in point, it’s straightforward to look disorganized if you’re using different hangers and baskets. Kim’s hangers are black. All of them. Sometimes it’s necessary to sweat the small stuff.
Customize but Leave Room for Growth
Kim edits her closet quite often and you should too. Regardless of seasonal change, fashion trends come and go. You have to anticipate this flux and leave a little space for new items.
