Road Trip Tips to Keep the Car Clean

Summer is a wonderful time to pack up and set out on the open road. And keeping your car clean and tidy during the long haul is key to a great adventure—whether you have a set destination or no destination at all. With this in mind, Vanessa Anderson, Molly Maid Oakville’s cleaning expert has a few essential road trip tips to share before you head out on your journey.

Make a Fresh Start

Take your car to the car wash for an exterior and interior clean – or do it yourself. Getting into a clean car sets the cleanliness bar right from the first day of your adventure, says Vanessa. It also helps to provide each passenger with their very own travel bag to keep goodies, reading material and neck pillows well organized.

Set Travel Rules

It’s always a good idea to set some ground rules before you leave. Let passengers know what types of food and drink can be consumed in the car. For instance, make a rule that all liquids must be in sealed drinking containers to prevent spillage. Vanessa recommends bringing foods that are easy to consume in cramped quarters, such as granola bars, chips or sandwiches. And, most importantly, remind each passenger to clean up after themselves to help keep the mess contained.

Pack a Cleaning Kit

Pulling together a few cleaning essentials to bring on your travels is essential for maintaining a clean vehicle. Vanessa suggests making a kit that includes paper towels and disinfectant wipes, or baby wipes, for unexpected spills that occur along the way. Throw in some Tide-to-Go to keep clothes stain-free. And, don’t forget to bring a few empty plastic bags to collect empty food and drink containers while in transit.

Take Advantage of Rest Stops

Consider every rest stop as a clean stop too. Ask everyone to remove their garbage and tidy up their clutter when they get out of the car, says Vanessa. While everyone is out of the car, use a disinfectant wipe to clean seats and remove any crumbs before getting back in the car. This is also the perfect time to repack each passenger’s travel bag to keep everyone’s travel items organized.
