There’s no end to the things we can clean in our homes, and there’s also no end to the things we didn’t know we needed to clean. For example, when was the last time you cleaned your grooming tools like combs, hair brushes and picks? Here are nine simple steps to keep your hair products in tip-top shape.
- After each use, remove hair from brush, comb, hair clips and elastics.
- Nightly, spritz with a mix of half water, half vinegar and a few drops of tea tree oil.
- Weekly, soak all-things-hair in mild liquid soap or baby shampoo. Scrub off dried hair products like styling gel, hairspray or mousse with an old toothbrush.
- Have a bamboo or wood comb or brush? Wipe down wooden parts with a microfibre cloth that’s been moistened with a couple drops of olive oil.
- If you’re travelling, don’t store your brushes and combs in your suitcase or toiletry bag. Leave them out on the bathroom counter, desk or shelf where they can air out.
- Kids tend to share combs, hair brushes, elastics and hair clips, as well as hats, baseball caps, and they’re always in very close proximity of one another. If your child has long hair, consider putting their hair up in a ponytail, braid it, or put it up in a hipster bun so that it’s less likely to come into contact with other kids’ hair.
- If your child gets sent home because they’ve got lice, do not panic. Instead, take a deep breath, put some calm music on, and be there for your child. There are plenty of over-the-counter as well as natural methods to get rid of this pesky insect.
- Make sure you prepare your child’s hair by first spritzing the hair until it is soaking wet. Comb section after section looking for eggs and casings. If you have a lice comb, great! If not, you can still get the job done with a regular comb. Remove any foreign bodies with your nails or tweezers. Once you’ve done a thorough job, douse your child’s hair with white vinegar until hair is soaking wet. Wring out. Comb out section after section. Lastly, apply a handful of olive oil to hair, rub into all areas of the scalp, at the lower base of the neck and behind ears. Comb well. Place hair in a shower cap for several hours. This will suffocate the lice. Finally, wash and thoroughly blow dry the hair.
