How to Clean up your Winter Lips's featured image

Winter in Canada is a peculiar phenomenon: our homes can be clean as can be, our finances are in order, we can be eating healthy and getting a good night’s sleep, and yet there’s still something that doesn’t feel quite right. The problem: our skin. Freezing cold weeks, wicked winds and extra high thermostats take their toll, particularly on our lips. But just as you would take extra care of your home, reading up on cleaning tips on your wooden furniture or houseplants in the winter, it is important to pamper your lips with these three easy steps from our cleaning service experts at MOLLY MAID.

Natural Ingredients

Sure, you can buy lip balm at the convenience store, gas station and even the subway kiosk, but have you ever noticed that those products just don’t really work? That’s because they’re made with ingredients that aren’t meant to moisturize your lips. Alcohol is just one of the many ingredients that contribute to ongoing lip dryness. Not sure what to look for? Speak to your doctor, dermatologist or chat with a skin care specialist at your local health food store. Look for ingredients you can pronounce and are recognizable things you’d want on your lips like almond oil, coconut butter and plant-based oils.

Daily Routine

Rome wasn’t built in one day, and neither are smooth lips. Starting tonight, apply an all-natural lip balm right before you fall asleep. Do the same thing before you leave your home in the morning. The first few days you may not notice a difference but by the end of a week you’ll start to notice fewer cracks, less dry skin, and your moisturized lips will feel and look more plump.

Drink Lots of Water

In the winter, we tend to only drink hot drinks and avoid drinking any water. But it’s in the winter months, that it is most crucial to hydrate.  In the winter, thermostats in our office buildings and homes are often cranked exceedingly high and can cause the air to become extremely dry, and harsh on your skin. If you work in an industry where you can’t have frequent bathroom breaks, start drinking water the minute you get home. Figure out a way to get your H2O fix – and your skin and lips will thank you.

For moisturized lips during the winter, try our DIY recipe for Sugar-Honey Lip Scrub:

  1. In a small bowl mix 2 teaspoons of brown sugar with 1 teaspoon of raw honey. If you like your skin products scented, add one or two drops of your favourite essential oil to the sugar/honey mixture.
  2. Blend with a spoon until sugar looks like it has dissolved into the honey. With a toothbrush or your index finger, apply the scrub to your lips. Rub gently for 2-3 minutes.
  3. Rinse off with coldish water.

Taking care of your skin is just as crucial as taking care and looking after your home. Let the expert cleaners at MOLLY MAID help you get your home on order so you can focus on nourishing you and your body.
