All winter long, golfers across the country have boasted about their handicap and dreamt of achieving the perfect putt. Well, the grass has grown and the fairway beckons. So, whether you’re headed to the nearest driving range for practice, a par 3 for fun or the prestigious 18-hole golf course to sink that hole-in-one, take a moment to give your clubs a good spit and polish. Looking like a pro is just as important as your swing.
The cleaning tools required can be picked up around the house. All you need is a plastic bucket, lukewarm water, a small amount of dishwashing soap, an old toothbrush, a microfibre cloth and an old towel.
Start with your Irons
- Squirt some dishwashing soap into the bucket and fill it with enough lukewarm water to cover the heads of your irons but no more. You don’t want the water coming up over the ferrules (plastic cover where the shaft enters the clubhead), as this could cause the glue that keeps the shaft and head firmly attached to loosen, especially if the water is too hot. Let clubs soak in the warm water for a few minutes, to loosen dirt and debris stuck in the grooves.
- Once your irons have soaked for at least five minutes, use an old toothbrush to clean out each club’s grooves. This may be the most important step in cleaning your clubs, as it will help increase the surface area contact with your ball at impact. The grooves in your clubs are there to impart spin, giving you added control.
- Once the grooves are clean, take your microfibre cloth and clean the rest of the clubhead. Use a hose to carefully rinse off the clubhead before buffing it dry with an old towel. Give the shaft a thorough wipe down. To eliminate any chance of rusting, ensure it is completely dry before putting it back into your golf bag.
Drivers, Putters and Other Clubs
Now for your driver, fairway, hybrid and putter. These clubs require a little bit more care when cleaning, and should not be submerged in water. Instead, rub them down using a damp microfibre cloth dipped in soapy water. Then be sure to dry them thoroughly.
PRO TIP: Don’t neglect your golf grips! A quick clean can give them new life and provide more traction when you hit the links. As with your more sensitive clubs, a moist microfibre cloth dipped in soapy water washes away built-up sweat and grime. Again, avoid water that is too hot as it may cause glue to loosen.
